Statement of Concern: I have concentrated my energies within ALA on intellectual freedom for the last four years as Chair of the ACRL Intellectual Freedom Committee; ACRL Representative to the ALA Intellectual Freedom Committee; ACRL Representative to the Freedom to Read Foundation Board; and IFRT director. Without strong individual and organizational support within ALA, intellectual freedom faces serious challenges from many who believe that our society loses little by discouraging multiple viewpoints. I have worked to show the dangers of this assumption. In the past three years, I have also organized two ALA programs (2004 and 2006) on intellectual freedom in academic libraries and have written two book reviews for the Intellectual Freedom Newsletter and an article for the Gordon Conable festschrift. I would bring to this position excellent organizational skills learned from my long history of participating in ALA, strong writing and speaking skills, and a passionate commitment to intellectual freedom.

Offices Held in State & Regional Library & Other Associations: Indiana Library Federation, 1981-1990 & 1995-present; District 1 Conference Planning Committee, 1982-1985 & 1997-present (Chair, 1984-1985 & 1999-2000); Intellectual Freedom Committee, 1983-1987, 1997-2003 & 2005-present (Chair, 1999-2002). Douglas Archer sponsored by the ALA Intellectual Freedom Round Table, ALA Intellectual Freedom Committee and ALA Divisional Intellectual Freedom Committees, American Library Association Annual Meeting, Chicago, June 25, 2005) Newsletter on Intellectual Freedom, November, 2005, v.54, n. 6, pp. 270-272 and 308-314; "Serving the Religious Information Needs of Our Communities without Blowing the Budget," [a practical application of Intellectual Freedom principles] Indiana Libraries, 2005, v. 24, (1) pp. 42-46; "Intellectual Freedom since 9/11: The USA PATRIOT ACT, etc. and Indiana Libraries," Indiana Libraries, 2002, v. 21 (2) pp. 1-5); "Intellectual and Religious Freedom," Indiana Libraries, 2000, v. 19 (2) pp. 7-10. Statement of Concern: The civil liberties affirmed in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution are absolutely essential to the survival of a democratic society. The continued defense of those liberties (the freedom of speech, the press, religion, and assembly) along with their logical extensions (the freedom to read, listen, view or otherwise access information) as delineated in the Library Bill of Rights is crucial if libraries and librarians are to fulfill their duties to our society and its members. We should provide free and open access to the world of knowledge from which our users are free to choose-for self-education, enrichment or entertainment-free of the fear of government intimidation. I have twenty-five years of experience as an intellectual freedom educator and advocate. I will use the expertise gained from it to continue fighting this good fight.

DIRECTOR-AT-LARGE (For a two-year term. 2 to be elected, VOTE FOR NO MORE THAN TWO)

SUESS, ERIC D.; KOLTUTSKY, LAURA; GARCIA-FEBO, LOIDA; CHRISTOS, LAUREN

SUESS, ERIC D., Education: University of Notre Dame, B.A. Government & Intl Studies, 1983; University of Michigan, MLIS, 1987. Present Position: Library Director, Commerce Township Community Library, MI, 2005-present. Previous Positions: Library Director, Wayne NJ Public Library, 2004-2005; Library Director, Fraser MI Public Library, 1997-2004; Acting Director, Hodgkins IL Public Library, 1997. ALA Activities: Member, LAMA-Systems and Services Section-Acq. Systems Comm.; Chair, IRRT Nominating Committee; Member, ALCTS Esther J. Piercy Award Jury. Offices Held in State & Regional Library & Other Associations: Member, New Jersey Library Association, IFC; Member and Chair, Michigan Library Association, IFC; Member, Michigan Library Association, Mgmt. and Admin. Division Board; Member, Michigan Library Association, Public Library Division Board; Member, Michigan Library Association, Membership Committee. Statement of Concern: In 1978, as a high school student, I was asked to help defend the school from a challenge to Of Mice and Men. In the 28 years that have followed this, I have been interested in and involved with issues of intellectual freedom, privacy and censorship. As a public library director I helped successfully defeat a global filtering effort, served as chair of Michigan Library Association's IFC and was an invited speaker at a Banned Books Week event. While a variety of current events have raised IF concerns, it is important that a consistent and reasoned approach to IF issues be maintained, and that we keep vigilant for those challenges which undoubtedly lie ahead. I feel my interest, knowledge and experience would serve the IFRT well. I would enthusiastically appreciate the opportunity to contribute!

KOLTUTSKY, LAURA, Education: University of Calgary, Canada, BEd, 1998; University of Alberta, Canada, MLIS, 2001. Present Position: Research and Instructional Services Librarian, University of Houston, Houston, TX, September 2001-present. Previous Position: Reference Assistant, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, 2000-2001. ALA Activities: IFRT liaison from SRRT, 2002-2006; IFRT representative to IFC, 2004-2005; Interim Treasurer for IFRT, Jan. 2005- June 2005; IFRT Chair, John Phillip Immroth Memorial Award Committee 2005-2006; FTRF liaison, SRRT, 2002-2004. Membership in Other Professional and Related Organizations: Chair, ACRL - EBSS - Instruction for Educators Committee, 2005-2007; Member, Social Responsibility Roundtable (SRRT), 2001-2006; Member, Progressive Librarians Guild (PLG), 2001-2006. Honors, Awards, Prizes, Medals, Citations: 2003 ACRL Institute for Information Literacy Immersion Scholarship; 2003 ACRL National Conference Scholarship. Statement of Concern: I joined IFRT as a student member. I recognized then that this unit would allow me to work on the crucial issue of intellectual freedom within the larger association. Having worked with members of IFRT's Executive Board for the past four years as the liaison from SRRT, I have admired how they have managed to combine these ideals with pragmatism. It is for this reason that I would like the opportunity to join them in this work as Director for IFRT. I would also like to continue building connections between IFRT and other units within ALA.

GARCIA-FEBO, LOIDA, Education: University of Puerto Rico, BA, Business Education, 1996; University of Puerto Rico, MLS,1999. Present Position: Assistant Coordinator, Special Services, Queens Library, January 2006-Present. Previous Positions: Spanish Language Collections/Cultural Arts Manager, Queens Library's New Americans Program, Nov. 2000-Dec.2005; Librarian/Chief, Library Services for Blind and Disabled, University of Puerto Rico, Jan.- Jun 2000. ALA Activities: Member, International Relations Round Table, Americas Subcommittee, 2002-2004; 2004-2006; Member, Diversity Committee/Diversity Council [REFORMA rep.] 2004-2005; 2005-2007; Member, Intellectual Freedom Round Table, 2006; Member, Social Responsibilities Round Table, 2006; President, REFORMA/ Northeast Chapter, 2005-2006; Chair, REFORMA/ LOTY Committee, 2003-2005; Member, REFORMA Northeast/ Programs Committee, 2003-2005. Offices Held in State & Regional Library & Other Associations: REFORMA, Northeast Chapter Liaison to New York Library Association [NYLA], 2003-2005. Membership in Other Professional and Related Organizations: Co-convener, IFLA/New Professionals Discussion Group, 2004-Present; Ex-officio member, IFLA/Management of Library Associations, 2005-Present; Member/Public Relations Committee ACURIL, Association of Caribbean Universities, Research, Investigation Libraries, 2003. Honors, Awards, Prizes, Medals, Citations: Queens Library's Library Luminary Award for "developing and promoting the Spanish language collection; planning, organizing and promoting cultural arts programs, location of partners for co-sponsorship of Hispanic cultural event and more, in support of multilingual and multicultural library services." September 2004; Selected from more than 750 applicants as one of the 30 fellows for the 'Fellowship for the Americas' program, sponsored by the IFLA 2001 National Organizing Committee to attend the IFLA Conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina on August, 2004. Statement of Concern: I am genuinely interested in promoting intellectual freedom, library and information professionals in alliance with civil society organizations. It is not a luxury, it is a need. Free and equal access to internet, filtering and blocking information, user privacy and anti-terror legislation are areas in which I am deeply interested. Besides that, cultural issues and women and freedom of access to information, in a global scale, are of great interest to me. The global free flow of information, intellectual freedom is a universal human value of vital importance to all. I've been working with IFLA/FAIFE since 2002 as a Spanish language translator collaborator. Work includes IFLA/FAIFE World Reports, Intellectual Freedom in the Information Society, Libraries, and the Internet World [2003] and Libraries, National Security, Freedom of Information Laws and Social Responsibilities [2005] and their questionnaires and answers from Spanish language countries.

CHRISTOS, LAUREN. Education: Florida International University, BA/English Literature, 1995; University of South Florida International, MLIS, 2000; Present Position: Associate Librarian, Florida International University, 2004-present. Previous Position: Assistant Reference Librarian, Florida International University, 1997-present. ALA Activities: Program Committee Member, IFRT, 2000 & Ongoing; Chair, New Member Committee, IFRT, 2002-2003; Director, IFRT, 2003-2005; Chair, Program Committee, IFRT, 2005-2006. Offices Held in State & Regional Library & Other Associations: Vice Chair, FLA Intellectual Freedom Committee, 2005-2006. Membership in Other Professional and Related Organizations: Member, Nineteenth Century Studies Association, 2002-2006. Statement of Concern: As a very concerned American citizen, it is my desire to do whatever I can to participate in activities that promote and protect the rights of the citizens of the United States. Through the work I do as a librarian in my university, to the work I do as a member of the Miami-Dade Bill of Rights Defense Committee, to the work I have done with IFRT, and to the work I plan to do as incoming state Chair of FLA/IFC, I have been fortunate to be inspired by the passions of my colleagues who are equally and deeply committed to intellectual freedom issues. In these particularly worrisome times, I am grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of an organization that truly understands and values our democratic principles and whose ideals I share. If elected, I promise to serve IFRT to my very best.

SECRETARY(For a two-year term, VOTE FOR ONE)

AIROLDI, JOAN; SNOWDEN, KENT E.

AIROLDI, JOAN, Education: Marquette University, B.S., 1968; University of Wisconsin, MLIS, 1995. Present Position: Director, Whatcom County Library System, October 2002-present. Previous Position: Director, Northern Waters Library Service, (held various positions; director from1995-2002). Offices Held in State & Regional Library & Other Associations: Wisconsin Library Association; Treasurer; 1998-2000. Membership in Other Professional and Related Organizations: Washington Library Association, 2002-Ongoing; Washington Library Association Legislative Planning Committee, 2002 to present; Friends of Library member, Ongoing; Public Library Association; Wisconsin Library Association. Honors, Awards, Prizes, Medals, Citations: PEN/Newman's Own Intellectual Freedom Award, 2005; Whatcom Human Rights Task Force, 2005 Human Rights Award. Publications: "One Book, One County, One Subpoena" for Alki, the Journal of the Washington Library Association, Fall 2005; "Case Study: A Grand Jury Subpoena in the PATRIOT Act Era," Library Administration & Management, Winter, 2006. Statement of Concern: A wake up call, in the form of a Grand Jury Subpoena, has changed my priorities. Non-stop lessons; through staff, trustees, the local and national public, and other organizations have followed the June 2004 FBI visit to Whatcom County Library System. These lessons have highlighted in bold the unique and crucial role that libraries play in information access in our democracy, and communicated the work that must go on at all levels of library service for this to continue to be so. I believe that ALA must provide leadership, education, guidance, and support on intellectual freedom issues for all association members. This belief is mirrored in ALA's new Strategic Plan 2005-2010, which has motivated and energized me to get involved. I am seeking the office of Secretary of IFRT so that I have a means for direct participation in this vital effort for the coming generations of our library public.

SNOWDEN, KENT E., Education: Jacksonville State University, B.S., April 30, 1988; Jacksonville State University, M.S. Ed., August 11, 1989; University of Alabama, M.L.S., December 23, 1994. Present Position: Library Director, Rosa Parks Library, Troy University, October 2005 - present. Previous Positions: Head, Access Services Dept., Rod Library, University of Northern Iowa, June 1999-October 2005; Media Services Coordinator, Pierce C. Cane LRC, Harry M. Ayers St. Technical College, Sept. 1996-May 1999; Audio Visual Technician, Houston Cole Library, Jacksonville State University, August 1989-August 1996. ALA Activities: Member, ALA/Video Round Table, 2000-2005; Member, ALA/IFRT, 2002-present; Member, Library Support Staff Interests RT, 2006. Offices Held in State & Regional Library & Other Associations: Chair, Iowa Library Association, LAMA Subdivision, 2004; Secretary, Iowa Library Association, LAMA Subdivision, 2003. Membership in Other Professional and Related Organizations: Member, Iowa Library Association, 1999-2005; Member, ILA/ACRL, 1999-2005; Member, Alabama Library Association, 2006; Member, Alabama ACRL, 2006; Member, Southeastern Library Association, 2006. Selected Publications: "Public Relations for a University Library: A Marketing Programme is Born," Library Management, Vol. 24, no. 4/5 (2003). Statement of Concern: In a country where the highest elected official accepts governmental eavesdropping without judicial warrant and endorses the renewal of the USA PATRIOT Act, I am gravely concerned that, as citizens, our privacy is NOT being protected. Preservation of an individual's privacy helps to protect that individual's freedoms; among these are the freedoms of thought, speech, expression, and association. Restricting or removing these freedoms essentially separates an individual from his/her intellectual freedoms. As information specialists, it is our duty to protect and preserve intellectual freedom for all individuals.

I would like the opportunity to represent the Intellectual Freedom Roundtable as its ALA Councilor.
