November 16, 2000

1999-2000 members: Sherry DeDecker, Chair; Patricia Cruse, Mary Mallory, Mae Schreiber, Andrea Morrison, Greta Marlatt.

Charge to the Working Group

Background In 1996, the Government Documents Round Table (GODORT) accepted a gift of $2,000.00 from Jack Sulzer to establish a Continuing Education Fund to be used for the support of projects to develop electronic and distance education resources. These resouces will assist librarians in the transition to electronic dissemination of government information. It is the general charge of GODORTs Government Information Technology Committee (GITCO) and the Education Committee to develop education and training programs for government information products. However, the designation of the gift to fund distance education activities warranted the establishment of an Ad Hoc Commitee, comprised of the membership of the two committees, to focus on the particular goals of this project.

After a series of meetings exploring a variety of proposals, it was decided to set up a web-based Clearinghouse for librarians working with government information. The money would be used to fund tutorials to help in this effort.

The first Call for Proposals was issued in Fall 1998. Four tutorials were funded.

A second Call for Proposals was issued in Fall 1999. The Working Group met at ALA midwinter in San Antonio to assess the proposals. Six proposals were entered; four were accepted, to be funded at $250 each. Sherry DeDecker presented the names at the GODORT second steering meeting January 18, 2000. Funded tutorials:

Previously funded tutorials have been mounted on the Government Information and Depository Management Clearinghouse: The work of the Group has now been completed. The result is the establishment of a Government Information and Depository Management Clearinghouse designed to assist government information librarians in the successful management of electronic government information. The $2000 gift from Jack Sulzer funded eight tutorials, which will be linked permanently from the Clearinghouse.

The Clearinghouse is an ongoing project of the GODORT Education Committee. The Education Committee will continue to oversee the development of the remaining tutorials, and monitor the existing ones to ensure their maintenance in the foreseeable future.
