GLBTRT 2010 Elections

The GLBTRT Membership Promotion Committee has issued a Call for Nominees for candidates to run on the 2010 Spring ballot. You may nominate yourself, or nominate another member of the GLBTRT. Nominations will close Monday, November 30, 2009.

The open offices are:

  • Co-Chair (female-identified)
  • Councilor
  • Secretary

Office Descriptions

Co-Chair (female-identified)

The below list of duties is taken from the GLBTRT Bylaws page. For more information about the office and how it fits into the Round Table leadership, see the GLBTRT Bylaws page. For an idea of the role and duties of leadership in this kind of organization, consult the parliamentary authority adopted by ALA, "The Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure, 4th Edition" by Alice Sturgis. Chapters 19 and 20, "Officers" and "Committees and Boards" are especially relevant to Co-Chairs. Co-Chair duties include:

  • presiding at all membership and Steering Committee meetings;
  • coordinating the meeting schedule for all Annual and Midwinter meetings and submitting the proper ALA forms to the various Round Table Chairs as well as the Office of Conference Services on a timely basis;
  • appointing the chairs of standing and Ad hoc committees and delegating tasks as appropriate to those chairpersons
  • acting as spokespersons for the Round Table;
  • acting as liaisons to the Office for Literacy and Outreach Services;
  • appointing two Round Table members on a two-year staggered schedule as the representatives of the Round Table to the ALA Diversity Council; and
  • responding promptly to correspondence addressed to the Round Table.

Councilor

GLBTRT Councilor duties include:

  • Represent the views of the Round Table to Council
  • Keep the Round Table apprised of Council actions and issues
  • Attend Council meetings at Annual and Midwinter
  • Attend Round Table Steering Committee meetings at Annual and Midwinter as much as possible
  • Other duties as assigned by the Steering Committee or Council.

Secretary

The below list of duties of the Secretary is taken from the GLBTRT Bylaws page. For more information about the office and how it fits into the Round Table leadership, see the GLBTRT Bylaws page. For an idea of the duties of a Secretary in this kind of organization, consult the parliamentary authority adopted by ALA, "The Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure, 4th Edition" by Alice Sturgis. Chapters 19, 21, 23, "Officers," "Committee Reports and Recommendations," and "Minutes" are especially relevant to the Secretary. Secretary duties include:

  • attending all Steering Committee and Membership meetings at both Annual Conferences and Midwinter Meetings during their term of office;
  • preparing and distributing an agenda for each of the Steering Committee and Membership meetings;
  • taking attendance and recording minutes of these meetings and promptly distributing copies of them to Steering Committee members and to other individuals or organizations mentioned in the minutes;
  • maintaining a file of Round Table minutes, the Steering Committee roster, and the bylaws;
  • maintaining the GLBTRT committee listservs, adding and deleting subscriptions as directed by the Co-Chairs and committee chairs, responding to requests for subscription, and working with the ALA Internet Coordinator, who is the Round Table list co-owner.

As with last year’s election, the upcoming election will be held online, with one exception. Members who are homebound and have no Internet access can obtain a paper ballot by contacting ALA customer service at 1 (800) 545-2433, ext. 5.

To be eligible to vote, you must be a member in good standing as of Jan. 31, 2010.

Polls will open on March 16. Polls will close on April 23 at 11:59 p.m. CST. When the polls open, the ALA will notify voters by e-mail, providing them with their unique passcodes and information about how to vote online.

It is important that members make sure that they are able to receive e-mail transmission well before the polls open. Information needed to White List the election material e-mail:
