GLBTRT Committees

Round Table Committees support and propel the mission of the Round Table. Each of these groups represent all the integral parts of our organization.

External Relations Committee

The External Relations Committee builds and sustains relationships with organizations outside of ALA who would like to partner with the Round Table to share information and conduct programs.  Publicizes the programs, activities and publications of the Round Table to individuals and organizations outside ALA.  Monitors ALA units, affiliates, and external library organizations on issues that need the attention/participation of the Round Table (e.g. Council, Diversity Council, internet filtering, Family Friendly Libraries, etc.).

Fundraising Committee

This Committee helps sustain the GLBTRT by securing funding beyond member dues. Funds raised by the committee cover Round Table expenses and go towards the endowment for the Stonewall Book Awards. Donations are welcome and encouraged. Checks may be sent to the ALA/Development Office, 50 E. Huron Street, Chicago, IL 60611, made out to ALA, or you may charge your gift to your credit card. Note clearly that your donation is to the GLBTRT.

Membership Promotion Committee

This group coordinates the staffing of the GLBTRT both at Annual Conference and other ALA events. Coordinates fundraising goals in pursuit of financial resources that will help to ensure the continuity of the Round Table and all of its activities. Publicizes the programs, activities and publications of the Round Table to ALA membership.

Newsletter Committee

The Newsletter is an important way that the Round Table communicates with membership and serves as a forum for the discussion of views among Round Table members about the Round Table's activities, priorities, and issues. The Committee compiles, produces, and distributes the newsletter four times each calendar year. The Newsletter contains information about the Round Table, ALA, book reviews and other news of interest to Round Table members.

Program Planning Committee

The GLBTRT Program List illustrates our Round Table's long history of presenting programs at ALA Annual Conferences and Midwinter Meetings. This Committee plans activities on the ALA two-year planning cycle, finds co-sponsors for the various Round Table programs and monitors programs of other ALA units which the Round Table may wish to sponsor.

Rainbow Project

The Rainbow Project is a joint project of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Round Table and the Social Responsibilities Round Table of the American Library Association. The Rainbow Project presents an annual bibliography of quality books with significant and authentic GLBTQ content, which are recommended for people from birth through eighteen years of age.

Stonewall Book Awards

Each year, we present the Stonewall Book Awards to the best books with gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered themes. There is an award category for literature and non-fiction works. Winning titles and honor books are announced at ALA Midwinter Meetings and the awards are presented at the Stonewall Book Award brunch at ALA Annual Conferences.

Stonewall Book Awards Celebration Planning Committee

This Committee arranges the annual Book Award Celebration, working closely with the Stonewall Book Awards Committee Chair, and the Program Planning Committee Chair. They also coordinate the set-up of the with the sponsoring hotel’s catering staff.

Website Committee

This Committee evaluates the Round Table’s Internet presence and helps guide the Round Table to best utilize Internet resources to further its mission. The group is also responsible for monitoring and recommending technologies to the Steering Committee of the GLBTRT that may be useful for conducting meetings, maintaining the website, and supporting the work of a distributed community. The Committee membership maintains the Round Table website content and applies accessibility standards and usability metrics to the Round Table web presence.
