Certified Public Library AdministratorPlanning and Management of Buildings

Instructor: Cheryl Bryan

Course Structure/Delivery:

This two-day workshop focuses on improving and updating skills in the basic principles of building planning and management. The program is interactive and it includes a variety of group exercises based on a case study about a medium-sized county library with multiple branches.  Using the same case study throughout the training will give participants an opportunity to apply what they are learning in a practical way in the “real” library – and to see the effects of the decisions they make throughout the two-day program.

At the end of the program, participants will  know how to assess the current condition of their buildings; develop a list of building maintenance and operation procedures; monitor performance for maintenance personnel; plan a building improvement project and present the planning documents; and develop a communications plan to keep stakeholders informed throughout a building project. Participants will be able to list the key components in a building program; to describe the planning and construction process for renovated or new facilities; and to list life and safety issues in building and operation planning.  They will know the procedures to employ architectural, engineering and consultant assistance in assessing or improving their building; how to list technology planning needs and associated building requirements; and how to convene a building planning committee and they will be familiar with conflict resolution techniques.  They will also be familiar with how to work with construction contractors including RFP design, construction meeting and project oversight and post-occupancy evaluation procedures.
