The agenda from this meeting (1/24/2009):

  1. Introduction of incoming co-chairs Jim Hahn and Patrick Griffis.
  2. Information item about program scheduled for ALA Annual 2009.
  3. Facilitated Discussion on Emerging Technologies in Libraries.

  1. We announced that the LITA national forum is still accepting presentations until February 20th. We announced the theme Open and Mobile.
  2. We discussed our sponsoring support of a presentation of recent work regarding the Open Library Environment for Annual 2009. (http://oleproject.org/)
  3. Discussion of future possible programs for Annual 2010.

Notes from facilitated discussion:

* Many good ideas brought up*

  • When do you know when to make the jump for certain types of technologies?
  • How do you justify the bleeding edge in tough economic times?
  • How do you turn emerging into mainstream services?
  • How do you get out of what you are currently doing? (how best to craft an argument which will show that adoption of emerging technologies will lead to increased effectiveness?)

Those previous four questions led Todd V. to sythesize: this could be a program, "From Sanbox to Grave: the IT lifecycle"

Other people interested in knowing how they can get staff skills up to date? How to allow your tech staff to experiment with open source, or other emerging technologies (possible collaboration with LITA continuing education for programming?)

Also discussed:

  • video and interactive installations
  • linked data (SKOS) ; next steps for Semantic Web; We need to hear about failures in Semantic Web stuff.
  • Horizon Report 2009 (PDF)
  • What can libraries use a Microsoft Surface for? (Darien Public Library Discussed; University of Nevada Reno, examples)
  • Forum of Ontologists (w/r/t crosswalking across different communities); Nature Publication of Research Data
  • MESUR project
  • Amazon's Cloud Sevice

FUTURE ACTIVITIES:

Program planning for Annual 2009: possible program "From Sanbox to Grave: the IT lifecycle"
