Accomplishments: I hope I have succeeded in changing the nature and perception of integrated library systems, in general, and the public interfaces to those systems, in particular. In my eight years at NCSU, I have overseen several successful IT projects--a laptop lending service, ILS migration, local ERM development (E-Matrix), a next-generation catalog (Endeca), and the building of a robust IT architecture for support of the physical and digital library. I have been able to maintain some status as a library IT practitioner while also entertaining a growing number of invitations to write, speak, keynote, and consult on library automation and the future of digital libraries. By far, my favorite success has been my continued professional engagement with colleagues and peers in organizations like NISO, ALA, and LITA.

STATEMENT: I was inspired to run for LITA president by the example set by LITA's past leaders. In an impromptu memorial to Henriette Avram, several past presidents spoke at a breakfast in New Orleans about the intense involvement of librarians--and LITA--in determining the future of library automation. We are now at a new critical juncture. It is up to librarians and LITA members to define our involvement in the future of the digital library. LITA is the organization best poised to deal with changes in digital library development, education, and publishing, not only because of its long and illustrious history, but because of the strength of its membership. I want to help LITA be the kind of organization that experienced librarians want to lead and new librarians want to join.
