POULTER, DALE, Education: University Of North Texas, M.S. Library and Information Science, 1998; Texas Tech University, B.S. Chemical Engineering, 1992. Current Position: ILS Coordinator and Systems Librarian, Vanderbilt University , 1999-present. Previous Positions: Systems Manager, Texas Tech University, 1996-98. ALA Activities: LITA: Member, 2007 National Forum Committee, 2006-Present; LITA: Chair, 2006 National Forum Committee, 2005-06; ALA: Intern, Web Advisory Committee, 2004-06; LITA: Member, Bylaws and Organization Committee, 2002-06; LITA: Member, Membership Development Committee, 2003-05; LITA: Chair, Hi-tech award committee , 2001-02; LITA: Member, Hi-tech award committee , 2000-01. Offices Held outside of ALA: UUGI: Member, Nominating Committee, 2004-05; UUGI: co-chair, Program Planning, 2002-03. Accomplishments: I have had the opportunity to develop and assist in developing several interfaces and service improvements for our local users. I find that learning to "translate" technical concepts into terms easily understood by people not working in this field (including library users) is one of my greatest accomplishments; this has enabled me to work with colleagues across the library spectrum and improve the overall user experience in libraries.

STATEMENT: Technology is changing faster than ever before. It is important for libraries to use and adapt technologies to enhance the user's experience in libraries. Beyond adapting these technologies we must aggressively share our experiences within the profession and market the "library advantage" to our users. As the technology division of ALA, LITA currently provides several venues for exchanging information, including ALA conferences and preconferences and the LITA Forum. As LITA members, we must continue to strive for more interaction between members and vendors to facilitate innovation in libraries. Together, we can make LITA stronger and more responsive to the needs of it members while setting the stage for the future of libraries.

STATEMENT: LITA has played an important role in my professional development. LITA members may represent different library types and communities but we are united by a common interest in technology. Today I teach library technology, information policy, intellectual freedom, and online information retrieval to the next generation of librarians. As a library educator I would bring a voice and a vision not often heard within LITA and could contribute to discussions about the skills needed for professionals in a digital world. LITA does an excellent job of creating programs and I would expand them to better mentor and train new leaders. I use emerging technologies as classroom tools to enhance learning and to help students better understand their impact on society. LITA members understand the benefits and risks of information technology. We're a value-oriented profession with a service mission and LITA can help librarians be better advocates for the public interest.

Honors, Awards, Prizes, Medals, Citations: Library Affairs Outstanding Faculty Award, 2001; Beta Phi Mu, 1992. Accomplishments: I have been a member of LITA since 1995 and have worked with and been mentored by a number of bright, encouraging people who have helped me as I served in various ways within LITA. I initiated the Distance Learning Interest Group when new technologies were being implemented into traditional distance learning initiatives. I later served for several years as the Interest Group Chair Coordinator where we first made available on the web information from the LITA manual relating to the IGs. I also served on the Regional Institutes and also served as the Chair, where in addition to providing new programming, we began examining the changing nature of delivery of educational materials to the membership. This year, I chaired a working group to investigate, in depth, the educational needs of the membership and look at ways to improve our education initiatives. Additionally, I have served on a number of other committees over the years. At this time, I look forward to serving the LITA membership on the Board of Directors.

STATEMENT: As technology has become pervasive in libraries, the role of LITA relative to the overall American Library Association becomes obfuscated. Many of the other divisions within ALA have discussion groups, programming, and committees that address technology issues related to their particular groups. While the LITA membership continues to have its eye on the emerging technologies that have an impact on libraries, it is important to clarify the unique roles of LITA members relative to the overall association. I look forward to working with the Board of Directors and the LITA membership to help frame out the future of LITA.
