ASCLA Committees

The ALA is sensitive to the issue of privacy for its members in regard to the Internet. For that reason, ASCLA has centralized the administration of listings to provide consistency in terms of fulfilling the privacy policy of ALA as well as working with the "live" membership database and thus providing automated, up-to-date contact information.

What follows are the charges for the division-level committees.

Accessibility Assembly

To advance ALA's continuing commitment to diversity and to accessibility of library and information services for all, including people with physical, sensory or mental disabilities, as reflected in the ALA policy on "Library Services to People with Disabilities" (54.3.2); to facilitate communication among ALA units, members and affiliated groups regarding issues such as equitable access to programs, services, collections, and facilities for library users with disabilities, employment of people with disabilities, and library accessibility policies; to encourage manufactures and vendors to develop library products and materials using the principles of universal design; to advance optimal accessibility of ALA services and programs; to develop and promote strategies for the recruitment of people with disabilities into the library and information science profession; and to advance coordination and cooperation of efforts within ALA and the profession to meet the challenges of providing access to all.

Awards Committee

To administer and publicize the awards presented in the name of the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies; to review periodically the appropriateness of existing ASCLA awards; to make recommendations to the ASCLA Board of Directors with respect to proposed new ASCLA awards; to modify, eliminate, or suspend existing awards when necessary.

Conference Program Coordinator

The Conference Program Coordinator serves as an ASCLA member peer consultant to program planners for ASCLA and its sections and committees for the purpose of developing a strong schedule of ASCLA sponsored programs at ALA Annual Conferences. The primary responsibility is to recommend the schedule of programs and allocation of program funds for approval by the ASCLA Board. The ASCLA Board must approve all programs scheduled at Annual Conference.

Specific responsibilities of the ASCLA Conference Program Coordinator are: To coordinate, facilitate, and provide continuity in conference programming of the general sessions of the association for the ALA Annual Conference; to review proposed programs of all units of the association for each ALA Annual Conference, for the purpose of avoiding duplication, ensuring appropriate cosponsorship within and outside the division, and complying with ALA conference program guidelines; to present to the ASCLA Board of Directors at the required time a recommendation and budget proposal for the division, section, and other unit programs for each ALA Annual Conference.

Legislation Committee

To develop policies, studies, and activities relating to state and federal library legislation; to relate state and federal legislation to local government; to coordinate these legislative activities with appropriate ALA units. The chairperson shall serve as liaison to the ALA Legislation Assembly.

Membership Promotion Committee

To establish general policies and procedures to secure new and continuing members; to develop and actively pursue an on-going membership recruitment program for ASCLA; to coordinate membership promotion activities of all sections within the association; to make recommendations to the ASCLA Board of Directors concerning membership dues; and to be responsible for staffing the ASCLA booth at Annual Conference. The chair shall serve as ASCLA's representative on the ALA Membership Promotion Task Force.

Nominating Committee

To nominate for all elective positions from the association membership, following the procedure specified in the association Bylaws, Article VII.

Planning & Budget Committee

To develop short and long-range plans, at the direction of the Board of Directors, for the division; to recommend priorities, activities, and programs to further the division's goals and purposes. To review, in light of short and long range planning, financial requests from sections, committees, and officers for new and continuing programs; to review the financial status and budget for the support of the division activities; to present to the ASCLA Board the committee's recommendation for the annual budget and its priorities in funding; to consult with the ASCLA executive director in budget preparation and revision throughout the year; to identify and consider new revenues areas which might be developed by the division; to recommend funding needed for new program areas under consideration as a result of the planning process.

Publications Committee

To coordinate policies and activities of the publications (all formats) program of ASCLA; to actively seek potential publications; to review proposed publications, provide advice, or recommend to the Board of Directors whether and how material should be published or distributed (including hard copy or electronic); and to recommend to the ASCLA Board of Directors candidates for appointment as editor of any serial publication.

Standards Review Committee

To direct the development of standards and guidelines appropriate to the institutions and activities represented in ASCLA; to review and forward with recommendations for action by the ASCLA Board of Directors on standards and guidelines developed by standards subcommittees; to appoint, in consultation with appropriate units, subcommittees to develop specified standards and guidelines; to maintain constant communications with the ALA Standards Committee relative to policy and formatting and to seek approval by the ALA Standards Committee on these matters prior to ASCLA Board adoption of standards and guidelines; to maintain continuous study for currency and relevance of existing standards and guidelines appropriate to the institutions and activities represented in ASCLA; to maintain liaison with other divisions of ALA in all matters pertaining to standards; to maintain liaison with other standard-setting agencies and closely related professional organizations for consistency in standard setting on the part of all concerned.
