Midwinter 2010 Institutes

(events requiring ticket purchases)

This January, ASCLA will offer two unique Midwinter Institutes designed to provide opportunities for networking, learning and fun! Tickets for these events will be available for purchase when 2010 Midwinter Meeting registration opens on October 1, 2010. More information about registration is available at www.ala.org/midwinter.

Registration for these events will close approximately one week prior to the event. If the event has not sold out, only a handful of seats will be available for purchase at the door. We encourage you to register early to guarantee your spot. And most importantly, you do not have to attend the Midwinter Meeting in order to participate in these events—come to Boston for the day, learn with us, and take home new knowledge to move both you and your library ahead.

Breaking Down Barriers: Best Practices in Universal Design for Libraries

Friday, January 15, 2010 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. As a result of the economic crisis, people are finding their way to libraries in record numbers to take advantage of the unique opportunities, experiences and services available there. Knowing that these patrons include a large proportion of people with some functional differences, how do libraries design their physical, communication and information environments to minimize limitations and maximize everyone’s experience? This intensive half-day institute presented by ASCLA in partnership with the Institute for Human-Centered Design offers an array of information about best practices in universal design, including opportunities for experiential learning. The agenda includes a forum in which you can present your library’s universal design problem or aspiration and receive on-the-spot consultation and solutions. This event will be held at the Institute for Human Centered Design (IHCD), formerly known as Adaptive Environments (AE), located at 180-200 Portland Street, Suite 1, in Boston. The MBTA’s North Station is only a few blocks away, providing access to the Green and Orange lines, as well as several commuter rail lines. Visit the MBTA website for more information about subway and commuter rail schedules. IHCD is a 30 year old international non-profit organization committed to advancing the role of design in expanding opportunity and enhancing experience for people of all ages and abilities. IHCD’s work balances expertise in legally required accessibility with promotion of best practices in human-centered or universal design.

Assembling a Consulting Toolkit: What You Need to Know to Become a Successful Library Consultant

Friday, January 15, 2010 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Are you looking for a change of pace in your profession, and ready to strike out on your own? Are you approaching retirement but looking for a flexible way to maintain employment? If you’re considering library consulting as your next career, don’t miss this full-day event designed to prepare you for library consulting success. Seasoned consultants and ASCLA members Nancy Bolt and Sara Laughlin will present an overview of the consultant’s role and guide you through a self-assessment to uncover your consulting potential. Participants will then work together in an active and engaging format to identify consulting opportunities in the library marketplace and how to align them with their experience and skills. Practical marketing tips and business management strategies are just a few of this event’s takeaways, which will prepare you to begin—or continue—a successful consulting career.
