Sharing Poetry with Children
This is a four week Moodle course that will begin the week of July 20, 2009 ending the week of August 14, 2009.
Registration is now closed.
Course description
So many of us feel inadequate when it comes to choosing and sharing poetry with young people. We were turned off or intimidated in years gone by. We're uncertain about what kinds of poems work best with kids. No more! Take a look at the major poets, poetry books, and anthologies of poetry for children (ages 5-12) being published today. In this class, participants will focus on reading and reviewing the latest poetry for kids, learning about poetry awards, exploring poetry on the Web, and trying interactive and participatory approaches for sharing poetry with children. One previous student commented, "Now, I shall just read poems and wonder, but not wonder if I am right or wrong."
Goal
Participants will:
1. learn about the cognitive, affective, and emotional benefits of sharing poetry with children. 2. become familiar with the wide range of current poetry published for children. 3. develop skill in planning activities for sharing poetry with children.
Course requirements
The course will be held in four weekly sessions with assignments to be completed between sessions. Participants will utilize PowerPoint slideshows and podcasts. They will particpate in online discussion boards. The following book is the required text: Vardell, S. 2006. Poetry Aloud Here: Sharing Poetry With Children In The Library.
