Education and Career Information Related to Children's Services

Professional development

In this fast moving world, children's librarians need to keep up with current trends, emerging technologies, issues, and research in the field.  ALSC's online courses and face-to-face conference programs will help you achieve your professional development goals.

Scholarships

Interested in making a difference in the lives of children and starting your career as a youth librarian?  ALSC sponsors two scholarships for individuals pursuing a master’s or advanced degree in children’s librarianship.

Competencies for librarians serving children in public libraries

Children's librarian must do more than simply provide age-appropriate service. Effective library service for children entails a broad range of experience and professional skills.  The Competencies seek to define the role of the librarian serving children.  Use the Competencies to develop job descriptions for your open positions or as a training resource with your youth services staff.
