Serials Cataloging Syllabus

Unit Goals

To acquaint and/or refresh those who need to become familiar with current aspects of descriptive cataloging specific to serials and acquaint those who need to become familiar with historical trends in serials cataloging.

This syllabus should require one or two class periods, depending upon the needs and flexibility of individual programs. It is assumed that the basics of descriptive cataloging, MARC, and the various cataloging tools (e.g.: Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed., rev., Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, Cataloging Service Bulletins) will have been covered prior to beginning this syllabus.

In the 2002 revision of AACR2, Chapter 12, "Serials" was renamed "Continuing Resources." Continuing Resources includes both serials and integrating resources. This syllabus focuses primarily on serials and continues to use that term.

I. What is a Serial?

  1. AACR2 Chapter 12 and Glossary
  2. Features of serial publications
  3. Comparison between serials cataloging and monograph cataloging

This syllabus was originally created by members of an earlier ALCTS Serials Section Education Committee in the late 1980s. In 2001, the committee assigned Margaret W. Hughes (Africana Cataloger, Hoover Institution, Stanford University) and Dajin Sun (Catalog Management Librarian, Yale University) to update the contents of this syllabus. Margaret made the first revision before leaving the committee, and Dajin went on to further revise the syllabus substantially with a significant contribution to the content and a huge enlargement of the bibliography.

The syllabus was revised and updated again in 2004 by Yumin Jiang, Technical Services Librarian, University of Colorado Law Library and Betty Landesman, Head, Collection Management, National Institutes of Health Library to reflect the 2002 AACR2 amendments and to update the bibliography and Web resources.

In view of the constant change in the field of serials, and in order to maintain the currency of this dynamic document, further revision is necessitated and expected of the future members of the Education Committee.
