Election 2009

Candidates for ALCTS President:
Dale Swensen and Cynthia Whitacre

dale swensen, candidate for alcts president 2009 Dale Swensen, Brigham Young University

As Dickens wrote, these are the best of times and these are the worst of times. The boundless advance of technology has changed our profession so profoundly in recent years that most of us are uncertain what the future will hold. Economic downturns of late only make the picture even more unclear. On the other hand, there has never been a greater need for new ideas, creative solutions, and increased collaboration among professionals in our field. One of our recent presidents coined the phrase “ALCTS is us,” meaning that our organization can accomplish what we as leaders and members are willing to pitch in and do. I believe that phrase applies to everyone in ALCTS from the president to the newest member. If you work with acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, preservation, continuing resources, or technical services management, you need ALCTS and ALCTS needs you.

It is an honor to run for this office. ALCTS is a leader in furthering standards for our profession, and that work must be a high priority. ALCTS must continue creating a forum of communication surrounding current topics in technical services. Providing convenient, affordable and relevant training and continuing education to our members is crucial. I want ALCTS to create more opportunities for collaboration between areas in technical services as represented by our Sections, and also between technical services and other areas of librarianship. In my position at OCLC I work with many vendor partners, standards, and quality control. I have worked in many areas of technical services, including collection development, acquisitions, serials, and cataloging, and have worked in and with many types and sizes of libraries. I value the diversity in our profession; I hope to foster that by attracting people new to librarianship to become ALCTS members.
