From the Editor
Midwinter is Upon Us
The ALA Midwinter Meeting in Denver, which will take place January 23–28, 2009, is quickly approaching. This issue of ANO contains, among other things, schedules of events for that meeting. Some of the meeting highlights include:
- The ALCTS Volunteer Forum on Saturday, January 24, 10:30 am–12 pm, in the Colorado Convention Center, Korbel Ballroom. This is a great opportunity to learn about the ALCTS committee appointment process and hear firsthand from the division appointing officers about opportunities throughout the organization. ALCTS President Dina Giambi, ALCTS President-Elect Mary Case, and ALCTS Executive Director Charles Wilt will also be at the Forum. This is a great opportunity to meet your ALCTS colleagues and to express your interest in participating within the Division.
- The ALCTS Member Reception on Saturday, January 24, 6–8 pm, in the Colorado Convention Center, Room 503/504. This is another opportunity to meet and mingle with ALCTS colleagues. This year’s reception has been generously funded by YBP.
- Two symposia on timely topics will take place during the conference: “Breaking Down the Silos” will take place on Friday, January 23, 8:30 am–4:30 pm in the Denver Marriott City Center, Denver Ballroom IV and “Implementing an Institutional Repository” will take place on Thursday, January 22, 8:30 am–5 pm in the Denver Marriott City Center, Denver Ballroom IV. Registration is required for both symposia.
- The ALCTS Divisions have planned forums. See the Midwinter Events section in this issue for details for the forums as well as interest group meeting topics.
Highlights in This Issue
In addition to the Midwinter Meeting information, I would like to draw your attention to some of the other items in this issue. See Bob Nardini’s “My ALCTS Experience” column for a very different take on the PVLR. Many of you know Bob from his work as a vendor, and I hope readers will enjoy his column as I did. The calendar of events includes events into December 2009 to help you plan for events to enrich your professional development. The “News” section of this issue includes a number of items of interest, including information about ALCTS’ Facebook presence, publication of the Second Edition of Fundamentals of Collection Development and Management (congratulations to Peggy Johnson), the RDA full draft, and Library of Congress’ merger of cataloging and acquisitions.
People
I am happy to announce that Peggy Johnson has been reappointed as the editor of LRTS, Edward Swanson has been reappointed as the LRTS Book Reviews Editor, and I have been reappointed as the ANO editor for a second three-year term. I extend congratulations to Peggy and Edward for their fine work and reappointments. The press release announcing the reappointments is online. I extend congratulations to my colleague Heather Moulaison, a member of the ALCTS Leadership Development Committee, on her appointment as the new Editor for the Research and Applications Section (peer reviewed) for LIBRES: Library and Information Science Electronic Journal. Heather’s appointment will commence with the March 2009 issue of the journal.
I also extend congratulations to my former assistant editor John Chapman, current Program Planning Co-Chair of the ALCTS Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group for his new position at OCLC. John joined OCLC in September 2008 as the New Metadata Ventures Product Manager.
