Harrassowitz KG* is a full-service global subscription agent, bookseller and
publisher that has served libraries throughout the world since 1872. The companys
headquarters are in Wiesbaden, Germany and a North American office is maintained
in Mobile, AL. Harrassowitz has been in continuous operation since its founding
in Leipzig, Germany. Services were curtailed when the company offices were destroyed
in an air raid on December 4, 1943, but new offices were established after the
end of the war in Wiesbaden, and shipments to American libraries soon resumed.
Harrassowitz provides libraries with periodical subscriptions from all
over the world, while its book and music services concentrate primarily on European
publications. Although the company has clients in all corners of the globe, its
primary market remains academic and research libraries in the U.S. In addition
to a complete array of global print subscription services, Harrassowitz now extends
its tradition of service to the management of electronic resources for academic
and research libraries with HERMIS 2.0, Harrassowitz Electronic Resources Management
and Information Solutions. HERMIS 2.0 provides a full suite of services to support
the acquisition, licensing and management of electronic resources. The firms
publishing activities are focused on Asian and Slavic Studies and Librarianship. Harrassowitz
has been at the forefront of the effort to transfer electronic data for both periodicals
and monographs in accordance with international standards and in keeping with
the specifications of the library systems used by its customers. Harrassowitz
actively participates in the development of national and international standards
with representation on the National Information Standards Organization (NISO);
EDItEUR, the International Group for Electronic Commerce in the Book and Serials
Sectors; and The International Committee on EDI for Serials (ICEDIS); and is committed
to testing and implementing new interfaces as they become available. *
