ALCTS Announces Continuing Education Events for Fall 2004

The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services is pleased to announce our fall continuing education schedule including three offerings of our popular Fundamentals of Acquisitions Web course and regional preservation, cataloging, and collection development workshops.

FUNDAMENTALS OF ACQUISITIONS WEB COURSE
July 12th, September 13th, and October 25th
Online Registration now available!

This Web course is tailored for librarians and paraprofessionals new to the acquisitions field. Introductory in nature, it focuses on what you need to know about the basics of acquiring monographs and serials. The five basic components of this course are:

• Acquisitions goals, standards, and professional resources.
  
• Methods and basic functions of acquisitions.
  
• Vendors
  
• Budget/finance and accounting.
  
• Ethics and good business practices.

Class segments are geared to cover issues of interest to staff in all types of libraries. Weekly chat sessions provide a forum for registrants to discuss topics further and share professional experiences.

RULES AND TOOLS FOR CATALOGING ELECTRONIC RESOURCES
September 13-14 in Chicago, IL

This two-day workshop provides instruction and exercises in various aspects of MARC/AACR2 cataloging of electronic resources including cataloging electronic monographs, serials, and integrating resources (Web sites & databases), and updating integrating resource records for changes, multiple versions and aggregators, and machine-assisted generation of cataloging.

BASIC SUBJECT CATALOGING USING LIBRARY OF CONGRESS SUBJECT HEADINGS
An ALCTS/Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) Workshop
October 2004 in Richmond, VA

This two-day workshop covers basic subject analysis principles and tools as well as provide training in the application of Library of Congress subject headings and subdivisions, MARC coding and subject authorities, SACO, and analysis of specialized subject areas and formats.

BASIC COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT
Fall in Chicago, IL

Discusses the responsibilities of the collection development librarian; explore and question traditional selection principles; explain what a collection development policy does; writing policy documents; evaluating your collection: collection-centered and user-centered techniques; selection; and, the impact of electronic resources on print collections and user behavior.

PRESERVATION WORKSHOP SERIES
Fall in Chicago, IL

The ALCTS Preservation Workshop Series begins a new year of exciting education events in early fall 2004. Based in Chicago, these workshops bring the very best of preservation education to the Midwest.
