Discussion

It was agreed that the group should have a wider scope to encompass the digital. Republishing DG was suggested as a new name.

Issues

Some issues of interest to this group were:

  1. Contractual issues
  2. New cameras available
  3. Forum for sharing new technology
  4. Relation of producers and users of products
  5. New collections that are available
  6. Copyrighting issues
  7. Access vs. Preservation
  8. Preservation photocopying is becoming digital and potentially re-sellable after the initial copy is made
  9. Web publishing
  10. Metadata issues/Cataloging - putting the preservation information into the holdings/item record (Harvard is actually noting in their catalog records when they find a preservation copy held by another institution.)
  11. Master listing of microfilm - what is available and what is missing from the film sequence
  12. Access services
  13. Labeling and guides to content
  14. Defunct micropublishers and their lost film - should LC be the repository for all of this film and how could that be accomplished?
  15. What are the environmental controls in UMI's vault?
  16. Center for Research Libraries (CRL) - what is their focus and could they be swayed or influenced more towards preservation?
  17. Bibliographic control issues related to storage vaults
  18. Reading equipment

Jan Merrill-Oldham and Austin McLean volunteered to co-chair this group for the next year. Austin volunteered UMI to do any promoting/publicizing of the group and its topics for the next meetings.
