Analysis of Relationships in Six LC Subject Authority Records
by Harriette Hemmasi and Gary Strawn

The following are six authority records of main headings from LCSH which contain a large number of reference structures (UF, BT, NT, RT). Along with the usual alphabetical display of these headings, some reference headings (usually NTs) have been categorized into conceptual sub-groups.

Each sub-group is labeled by a guide word or node label, (i.e., <by time of year>, <associated documents>). The use of node labels is a common thesaural practice, (see The Art & Architecture Thesaurus). Node labels are not indexed terms; they are simply words to guide the user.

While the categorization of all reference headings for all LC subject headings is seen as both unnecessary and impractical, this conceptual presentation of the reference headings is an attempt to generate a more transparent and quickly browsable subject authority record. Imposing a conceptual framework on multiple reference headings may also help users grasp the potential scope of the main heading and its related headings.

Some questions that have arisen from this part of the Subcommittee's work are:

  1. how can standard thesaural techniques help enhance recording and displaying relationships in LCSH within its current structure or in a changed structure?
  2. would it be useful to create/display non-postable guide words in LCSH?
  3. if they were deemed useful, could guide words be incorporated from other sources, such as AAT, MESH?
