CETRC Mentoring Subcommittee
The CETRC Mentoring Program provides one-to-one year-long mentorships with practicing catalog librarians for new cataloging professionals and library/information science graduate students who are interested in cataloging. Participation in the program provides insight into areas of catalog librarianship that are of interest to the mentee, such as career guidance, résumés/curricula vitae, interviews, professional development opportunities, etc. The Mentoring Program Subcommittee believes it is most beneficial for the mentee to lead the discussion.
The Subcommittee actively seeks new mentors; the program takes very little time, probably one to two hours per month, and the discussions are insightful even for those who have been in the profession for many years. The program does not provide work experience or help with student coursework, yet the discussions are fruitful and engaging for both mentors and mentees. Participants regularly state how beneficial the program has been for them.
Charge: To foster the recruitment of library school and information studies graduates to cataloging careers. The subcommittee will plan, coordinate and implement the Mentoring Program of ALCTS CCS CETRC on an on-going basis. Through this program the committee will disseminate information about technical services work, current practices and emerging trends with special emphasis on cataloging and metadata creation. By developing the knowledge of professional cataloging and stimulating the dialogue between cataloging practitioners and potential cataloging job applicants the committee will aim at enlarging the pool of candidates interested in a cataloging career among the next generation of library school graduates.
