ALCTS CCS Committee on Education, Training and Recruitment for Cataloging (CETRC)
Continuing Education Subcommittee

ALA Midwinter Meeting 2006
Saturday, January 21, 4:00-6:00

Minutes

Members Present: Rebecca Mugridge (Chair), Sylvia Hall Ellis, Pat Lawton, Sheila Tawney, Brian Vetruba, Priscilla Williams,

Guests: Margaret Maurer

1. Introductions. CETRC CE Subcommittee members and guests introduced themselves.

2. Review of Agenda. The agenda was amended to add the ALCTS Education Summit report (Vetruba) and the President’s Forum report (Lawton)

3. Survey of continuing education needs. The Continuing Education Subcommittee Subgroup (Priscilla, Pat and Brian) was responsible for putting together a rough draft outline of the continuing education needs for catalogers survey. Priscilla reported that the group met by conference call and email. They reviewed the 2003 PCC Continuing Education for Catalogers needs survey and summary of responses done in 2003 and summary of the ALCTS regional program evaluations. We used the summary of responses to identify the “hot topics” most likely catalogers would need training in on an on-going basis to come up with the initial draft outline. Committee members discussed the draft and offered helpful feedback for ideas on streamlining the survey to present the kind of survey questions that would optimally give us the results we want. The Subgroup was asked to come up with a completed draft survey within the next six weeks.

4. Fundamentals of Cataloging online course. Pat led a discussion of what the appropriate content of such a course would be. Some of the issues raised were:
· It would be good to incorporate some practice exercises
· Will there be interaction between student and trainer for this course?
· Margaret will set up FUNDCAT, a listserv for the Fundamentals of Cataloging course developers

5. Web space for Subcommittee documents. Rebecca reported that ALCTS will provide training on its content management system through a series of webcasts. Sheila and Steven Miller will pursue learning to post to ALCTS Web page by signing up for one of these sessions.

6. Hot topics from ALCTS workshop evaluations. Rebecca distributed a list of hot topics that ALCTS workshop members identified as being of interest.

7. ALCTS Education summit. Rebecca will forward responses from the Education summit to the group when they are shared by Karen Letarte (March).

The meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m.
