Minutes - July 8, 2000
Members present: Kit Herlihy (chair), Margaret Hecker, Andrea Stamm, Diane Boehr, Beth Picknally Camden (recorder), Cecilia Knight, Ingrid Mifflin
Members absent: Elaine Bao, Michele Behr
Guests: Susan Morris, Tatiana Barr, David Banush, Lisa Beinhoff, Judy Sandstrom, Cathy Gerhart, Charlene Kellsey, Kathleen Schweitzberger
Minutes of the Midwinter 2000 meeting were approved as amended.
M. Hecker reported on the March 2000 revision of the Mentoring bibliography. Article a recent C&RL News was suggested as an addition. Margaret will update and send to committee by 9/1.
Reports on the mentee contact process:
- C. Knight reported on contacts with Dominican University via letter and follow-up email. She followed up with several students, and we have three mentees from Dominican.
- D. Boehr reported that she received no response from University of Alabama despite several follow-ups.
- I. Mifflin has contacted the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and this resulted in one mentee.
Suggestions for future contacts: There were difficulties in identifying the current dean of the various schools. Lisa Beinhoff (guest) reported on a survey showing two types of library schools: those with a commitment to producing catalogers and those who don't. She suggested contacting the schools with good cataloging professors. The person setting-up internships at the schools might also be a good contact.
Reports on the mentor contact process:
- A. Stamm is both a liaison and a mentor. She has had contact with her mentee via e-mail and phone, as well as a full-day site visit. She has been helping with resume review and job search. A written plan has not been done. The mentee was interested in a less formal arrangement.
- B. Camden reported that the mentor (Lambrecht) would not be able to begin the relationship until after ALA 2000.
- D. Boehr reported for Michele Behr (who is on maternity leave). The mentor (Thompson) and mentee (Weinberg) have been introduced, but we have not had a report since the introduction.
- K. Herlihy reported that the pair (Clark/Scott) to which she is a liaison has been introduced, but as this is a distance relationship they have not yet met in person.
Assessment:
Elaine Bao gathered information on assessment and sent to the committee in April 2000, but was not present for this discussion. K. Herlihy reported that CCS Executive is very interested in this part of our pilot. Discussed the difference between assessment and evaluation. Need to assess the program, not the individual relationships. B. P. Camden suggested developing survey questions for both the mentors and mentees.
Susan Morris (guest) reported on the survey used the Library of Congress as a mid-term assessment. Categories of questions included: program effectiveness, time commitment, suitable match, leadership support, and supervisory observation. Example question: "What three things has the program done best".
The future of pilot project was discussed. Is our target audience just students, or should we include first-year catalogers and mentoring the transition from student into professional? How long should a mentor/mentee last? Six months is too short; a year may be about right. Sources for mentors/mentees in the future? Perhaps Autocat. Next year's committee will need to decide whether to continue after assessing the program.
Draft questions for the assessment
Mentee questions:
- Was it a suitable match? Why/why not? What factors should have been considered in making a match?
- Did it meet your expectations?
- Do you feel you have a clearer understanding of what a cataloger does?
- Have your future plans changed based on the relationship?
- Have you applied for cataloging jobs? Why/why not?
- Have you been hired in a cataloging job?
- Was an appropriate amount of time spent?
- Did the CETRC liaison provide appropriate support?
- What has the program done best?
- Anything else?
Mentor questions:
- Some are the same as mentee
- What were the benefits to you?
CCS Executive at Midwinter 2001 must approve the assessment questionnaire. So, we will need to set a deadline for finalizing.
The possibility of a program at ALA 2002 on our mentoring pilot was discussed.
