Reports of ex-officio members, liaisons, and consultants: Library of Congress/Annotated Card Program—written report submitted. Jane Gilchrist highlighted the progress of the Integrated Systems Office in trying to accommodate external users of the LC Database via the LC Online Catalog (catalog.loc.gov) as well as Z39.50 access to the LC Database. LC has implemented the 2002 revision of the 2nd ed. Of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules. Revised LC Rule Interpretations were published and are currently available in Cataloger’s Desktop or as printed copies. Significant changes to be seen in LC bibliographic/authority records. Changes are posted on the CPSO public website. The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) will migrate its database to LC ILS (Integrated Library System) in February 2003. LC librarians in eleven LC reading rooms are using QuestionPoint’s “live chat” to assist LC’s online patrons, Monday-Friday 2-3 p.m. on the library’s “Ask a librarian” web-page. The service will expand to involve other librarians who will assist patrons in their search strategies with voice-over-IP (VOIP) and video communication. The Third National Book Festival, sponsored by LC and hosted by First Lady/Librarian Laura Bush will take place on Saturday, October 4, 2003 in Washington, D.C. Check www.loc.gov/bookfest for the details as they unfold. LC is also collaborating with the University of Maryland’s Human-Computer Interaction Lab and the Internet Archive to identity children’s literature in the public domain from LC’s Rare Book collection and General collection for a digital library for children. For more information on the project please go to www.archive.org/children/ and www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/kiddesign/searchkids.html The Library’s Cataloging Directorate is seeking catalogers for all languages, formats, and subject areas. To read vacancy announcements and submit applications online go to http://www.usajobs.opm.gov The redesigned LC website is at www.loc.gov . Joseph Miller reported on Sears List items including the 2002, 17th edition, second annual electronic update distributed to tape customers in December that includes 98 new subject headings and 28 revised records. Among the new headings are: Fetal alcohol syndrome; Holocaust denial; Jihad; Moral development; Peer pressure in adolescence; Slave narratives; and Tax evasion. The new headings are for topics of current interest or of increasing importance for the kind of materials collected by school and other small libraries. In addition, the Sears List of Subject Headings, 18th ed. is scheduled for release in January 2004. This edition will include changes made in the 2001/2002 updated tapes and will reflect new ideas in cataloging policy, especially as regards the application of subject and genre access to individual works of fiction. Joan Goodsell, Assistant editor of Subject Authority Files at the H.W. Wilson Company has been named Associate editor of the Sears List and is assisting Joseph Miller in preparing the 18th edition of the List. Gregory New highlighted Dewey developments including the quarterly updated WebDewey database. The first two quarterly releases of calendar year 2003 in January and April contain updates from the DDC 21 database. The April release will be the last one based on the updated DDC 21 database. The WebDewey July release and the DDC 22 print versions will be based on the DDC 22 datatbase and issued simultaneously. The initial electronic release and the print verson will be the same interms of the content of the schedules and tables, but WebDewey will contain many more built numbers and index entries. LC plans to start assigning DDC 22 numbers on July 1, 2003. Included will be the numbers 201 to 209 which have not been in use for several years. The new numbers will be for religion in general. The imprint, Forest Press, is being retired.
Kay Lowell reported on CC:DA and the discussion of FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records). Gabi promised to send out the Barbara Tillett FRBR presentation. (Done—end of January. Also, for more information please see http://www.ifla.org/VII/s13/frbr/frbr.htm or http://www.ifla.org/VII/s13/frbr/frbr.pdf
Mary Dabney Wilson, chair of ALA ALCTS-Cataloging and Classification Section, spoke of a program being given in Toronto: Growing Our Own: Mentoring for Cataloging. Approximate day and time: Saturday, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Also discussed was the need for cataloging courses to be taught in ALA approved library programs. CCMC approved Joseph Miller’s letter. He will send a copy to Gabi and she will forward it to Mary Dabney Wilson for ALCTS action. Mary Dabney Wilson also addressed the need to find new committee members. Volunteer forms are on the ALCTS website.
The 4th edition of Cataloging Correctly for Kids with Jane Gilchrist as editor is on track. The end of March is the deadline for article submission by the assigned authors. Additional articles are needed. Gabi suggested Robert Maxwell for an article on AACR2. Jane will first check with LC colleagues.
Gabi did not pursue a CCMC joint program with PLA and/or AASL. She cited that members were too busy working on CCfK articles. She suggested the committee submit an article to School Library Journal citing a large readership and/or a CCMC website FAQ or Q&A page. Mary Dabney Wilson, Kirsten Ahlen, and Jennifer Bowen pointed out that complications occur when a publication originates from a committee. If some from the committee would like to write the article as “persons” not committee “members” the article could be published without going through the ALA/ALCTS publishing hierarchy. Gabi and Kay will check this out. Jane will funnel questions she is frequently asked to Gabi who will compile a list from Jane’s FAQ and the input of committee members and send the list to Kirsten Ahlen who will put them up on the CCMC website.
Meeting adjourned at approximately 5:10 p.m.
Next meeting is in Toronto, June 2003 (more information to come)
