Special Library of Congress Tours for ALCTS Members

On Friday, June 22, and Monday, June 25, the Library of Congress Acquisitions and Bibliographic Access Directorate will offer special tours for members of ALCTS. The tours begin with a 30-minute walkthrough of the LC technical processing areas and conclude with in-depth discussions of topics of special interest to acquisitions and cataloging librarians.

After the focus discussion on both Friday and Monday, the LC Collections Access, Loan and Management Division invites you to view the collections control room and stacks in the Thomas Jefferson Building. On Friday only, you’ll finish in the Jefferson Building in time for the open houses in the special collections reading rooms (from 2:00-4:00) and the Main Reading Room (from 5:00 to 7:00). This is a rare opportunity to see an acquisitions-to-access processing operation, tailored to your particular interests.

The following special focus tours are offered for ALCTS members:

Friday June 22

1:30 – Tour of processing areas: An LC staff member will escort you along the path of an item as it’s received for the collections, cataloged, and sent to the stacks for service to our users.

2:00 – The tour concludes with your choice of the following special focus topics:

Serials cataloging and serials control

With Linda Geisler, Head of Serial Record Cataloging Section I

JACKPHY cataloging at LC: transition from RLIN 21 to the LC ILS

With Dr. Joan Biella, senior cataloging specialist, Hebraica Team

ABA workflow redesign

With various LC technical processing managers

Monday June 25

1:00 – Tour of processing areas: An LC staff member will escort you along the path of an item as it’s received for the collections, cataloged, and sent to the stacks for service to our users.

1:30 – Repeat tour of processing areas

On Monday you can also choose from the following special focus topics:

1:30 – Electronic Cataloging in Publication

2:00 – LC Electronic Resources Management System pilot project
