Retirements
Katharine E. S. Donahue,
associate director of UCLA’s History and Special Collections for the Sciences, Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library, retired July 1, 2008. She began her career as a librarian at the Natural History Museum, Los Angeles County in 1970; she became the museum librarian in 1974. She brought the library into the electronic age by working with the University of Southern California to digitize the museum’s rich serials holdings and introduced OCLC in 1979. In 1987 she accepted the position of head of the history and special collections for the Biomedical Library. Over her 20 years, she raised the profile of the collection and expanded its purview from medicine and biology to include the physical sciences. She actively participated in creating Web exhibits and making collections, such as AIDS posters, available on the Web. Her museum experience fostered an interest in exhibits, and over her career she created exhibits large and small. Of particular significance was her participation in the organization and execution of the exhibit “The World From Here: Treasures from the Great Libraries of Los Angeles” in 2001. Both the exhibit and the catalog of the same name contributed to an expansion of awareness about the richness of the libraries in Los Angeles County. She contributed to the profession in a variety of ways, including co-teaching a class on special collections in the health sciences with Joan Echtenkamp Klein (Alvin V. and Nancy Baird curator for Historical Collections) at Rare Book School, University of Virginia. Donahue is now librarian emeritus and will continue to be involved with UCLA.
