Lori Goetsch and Lisa Hinchliffe

Lori A. Goetsch, dean of libraries at Kansas State University, is the 72nd president of ACRL.

“When I stood for election two years ago, little did I know that I would enter my presidential year with our country in economic crisis. In light of this situation, the two initiatives that I talked about then—library workforce development and ACRL as your professional home—have taken on a sense of urgency.

“My goal is to make certain that ACRL is well-positioned to support our members through and beyond this time of uncertainty and opportunity. As we adjust to diminishing resources, it is more critical than ever to demonstrate our value and contributions to teaching, learning, and research on our campuses.  I will actively promote the importance of library workforce development—succession planning, retooling for new and emerging roles and responsibilities, and ongoing training and development for all library staff—as a means of positioning libraries to continue to make a meaningful contribution to the mission of their colleges and universities.

“To help you demonstrate the value of your libraries, ACRL must be valued by you.  I will work with the ACRL Board of Directors and staff to be responsive to member needs at a time when funds for travel and professional development are tight. We will seek innovative ways to engage members through virtual communities, such as the new ALA Connect, and continue to offer outstanding virtual professional development opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge.”

As president, Goetsch will preside over the ACRL Board of Directors and ACRL Executive Committee, and plan ACRL’s major program at the 2010 ALA Annual Conference. She will work with the ALA president and other division presidents representing ACRL both within and outside of ALA.

From 1997 to 2004, Goetsch was director of public services at the University of Maryland Libraries. She also worked at the University of Tennessee where she served as head of reference services (1993–97). Prior to that, she was head of information/reference at Michigan State University (1987–93), where she also worked as information/reference librarian (1985–87). She served as assistant reference librarian at the University of Illinois-Chicago (1982–85).

Her activities in ACRL include serving as director-at-large on the ACRL Board (2004–present), as chair of the Nominating Committee (2004–05), and as a member of the 2005 National Conference Invited Papers Committee (2004–05). She served as a member of the Information Literacy Competency Standards Task Force (1998–2002), and was chair of the University Libraries Section (ULS) Standards and Guidelines Review Committee (2000–01). Goetsch was chair of the Women’s Studies Section (WSS) (1994–95), and ULS (1997–98). Her ALA activities include serving as a member of the Equality Award Jury (1996–97), and the Committee on the Status of Women in Librarianship (1994–96). She was also an RASD representative to the Recruitment Assembly (1992–94).
Goetsch’s work with state and regional associations includes membership in the Greater Western Library Alliance, where she is currently a member of the Board of Directors (2007–present), and she was a member of the Planning and Organization Committee (2005–06). She is a member of the Kansas Library Network Board/State Librarian Advisory Commission (2006–present), and she served the Michigan Library Association as chair of the Management and Administration Forum (1991–92), and the Annual Conference Program Planning Committee (1988–89).

Goetsch received the University of Tennessee’s Professional Development Award (1995) and was awarded Michigan State University Libraries’ Distinguished Librarian Award (1992).

Her publications include coauthor of “Creating a Culture of Security in the University of Maryland Libraries,” Portal: Libraries and the Academy, October 2001; coauthor, “Electronic Reference Service (Association of Research Libraries), 1999; editor, Information Technology Planning (Haworth Press), 1999; coauthor, “Readin’, Writin’, Arithmetic and Information Competency: Adding a Basic Library Skills Component to a University’s Curriculum,” CWIS: Campus Wide Information Systems, 1998; author, “Reference is More Than a Desk,” Journal of Academic Librarianship, 1995; coauthor, Information Desks in Academic Libraries (Association of Research Libraries), 1995; and coeditor, On Account of Sex, 1987–1992 (Scarecrow Press), 1993.

Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, coordinator for information literacy services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been elected vice-president/president-elect of ACRL.

“It is an honor and privilege to serve as the next vice-president/president-elect of ACRL. I am excited to have a leadership role in helping ACRL continue to develop and flourish as an organization. We must continue to build on our success and offer expanded opportunities for members to pursue their interests in meaningful ways. My goal is to enable every ACRL member to benefit from his or her personal connection with the association. Even in these challenging times of economic and social change, I envision a bold and exciting future for academic librarians as our institutions reinvent themselves in today’s knowledge/information society. I look forward to working collaboratively with the ACRL Board of Directors in pursuing themes of advocacy, continuous professional learning, and organizational agility.

“While standing for election, I had the opportunity to talk with hundreds of ACRL members and was impressed by their passions, ideas for innovation, and dedication to our profession and the association. As a leader, I know that the best initiatives emerge from sharing ideas freely and collaboratively defining proposals and plans for action. We need everyone’s participation and ideas. I invite all current and potential ACRL members to a continuous conversation over the coming years about our association, how it will evolve, and how they would like to be involved. Please call, e-mail (ljanicke@illinois.edu), IM (Google Talk: lisalibrarian, AIM: LibLisa), or find me on Facebook!”
