Purpose
Provide opportunities for ACRL E.J. Josey Spectrum Scholars to participate in an ACRL professional development activity and provide an opportunity to build and foster stronger relationships between Spectrum Scholars and their existing or potential mentors.

Goals

  1. Provide Spectrum Scholars with ACRL professional development activities.
  2. Provide these Spectrum Scholars with a quality learning experience outside of their traditional educational setting.
  3. Assist these Spectrum Scholars in building a network of colleagues.
  4. Give Spectrum Scholars the opportunity to build new, and strengthen existing, relationships with potential or existing mentors.

Award
Five awards consisting of complimentary advanced early bird registration (a value of $95) and $600 cash for travel expenses. The total value of the travel grant is $695.

Eligibility Criteria
Recipients are limited to Spectrum Scholars that are enrolled full-time at an ALA-accredited institution and recommended by their library school Dean or Director as evidenced by a brief statement of support, Dean’s/Director’s name and contact information (e-mail and/or phone number). Preference will be given to students who are currently members of ALA and ACRL and to students whose graduate programs provide matching financial support for their attendance.

Application Process
The application deadline is December 1, 2006. In order to be considered, applicants must have sent a copy of their completed Spectrum Scholar Travel Grant Application Form including a brief statement as to what goals and/or learning outcomes they expect from attending the ACRL National Conference, and a current resume/curriculum vitae and to: Locke Morrisey, E.J. Josey Spectrum Scholar Mentor Committee, University of San Francisco, Gleeson Library, Geschke Cntr., 2130 Fulton St., San Francisco, CA 94117-1049. Locke Morrisey may also be reached at morrisey@usfca.edu.

Award Committee
The award committee consists of the members of the E.J. Josey Spectrum Scholarship Committee as well as the Chair of the E.J. Josey Spectrum Scholar Mentor Committee. Besides preferences stated above under Eligibility Criteria, some of the factors considered in awarding the travel grants include evidence of commitment to academic librarianship, commitment to academics, good leadership ability and good communication and organizational skills.

Selection Notification
Scholarship applicants will be notified via e-mail after the ALA Midwinter Meeting in late January, 2007. Scholarship applicants should not register for the ACRL 13th National Conference until notified of their status to avoid the need for refunds. The early-bird registration deadline is February 7, 2007.
