Jay Bhatt received the M.S. in Library and Information Science from Drexel University in 1997 and M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering also from Drexel in 1986. He joined the Hagerty Library as an Information Services librarian for Engineering in December 1997. He is actively involved with the collection development in engineering emphasizing electronic resources, outreach to faculty and students to teach and inform new electronic resources and assisting faculty and students in their information retrieval process. He is also interested in information competencies for engineering faculty and students since more resources are now available electronically, and learning these resources is becoming significantly important in their scholarly research. He loves mentoring and working with students.

He is actively involved with the Engineering Libraries Division of the ASEE. He is also the 2003 recipient of Drexel University's Harold Myers Distinguished Service Award.

I'm head of the Chemistry Library at UT-Austin, working with collections and services related to chemistry, chemical engineering, and nutrition in a large, branched research library environment. I've also been heavily involved in WWW/Internet services, publishing, and training. My personal areas of focus tend to lie in serials management, collection development, and scholarly communication trends. Before coming to Texas I was a librarian in the chemistry and engineering libraries at the Univ. of Michigan at Ann Arbor and in reference at the Sci/Eng Lib at the Univ. of Arizona where I attended library school.

My library experience has included public services and administrative positions in ARL science libraries. I came to librarianship with a doctorate in Chemistry and have maintained an interest in that specialization. I have worked on many aspects of automated systems doing training and documentation as well as on screen design for locally-mounted databases. I am involved in UIC's digital library activities, working on our Web pages, and dealing with electronic databases and journals. My research focuses on scientists' use of information technology. I am currently employed in an institution where librarians have full faculty status with all the attendant obligations for research and publication. I have a wide range of experience running a very busy branch library, including dealing with personnel (both student & permanent), collection development, bibliographic instruction, building/construction woes, dealing with faculty, and much more. My educational background was not in the Sciences, but in the Humanities and Social Sciences, so most of my science knowledge comes from being on the job. Swarthmore is part of a TriCollege consortium with Haverford and Bryn Mawr,  which has provided me with some valuable experience dealing with other staffs, faculty and administration.
