Welcome to the Instruction Section! With approximately 4,000 members from all types of academic libraries, we have a wealth of expertise, experience, and enthusiasm related a wide range of issues related to instruction and information literacy and offer an array of opportunities to contribute to the professional development of colleagues and the future direction of these issues.
As the Chair of the Instruction Section this year, I invite you to be a member of IS and become active nationally in issues related to instruction and information literacy. The Section provides programs at the ALA and ACRL conferences, forums for members to share ideas, documents and standards that guide practicing librarians, and a wide range of opportunities for networking in person and online with colleagues who have similar interests.
If you are just becoming familiar with the Section, feel free to contact the Membership Committee or any other current committee member to learn more about the organization. Browsing the current list of committees and task forces, and each committee’s web site, is an easy way to get an overview of the big issues, current projects, and members of each group.
I hope you will consider participating in the work and collegiality of the Section such as by volunteering to serve on committees and task forces through the Committee Volunteer Form, attending the IS programs at upcoming conferences, contributing to ILI-L (Information Literacy and Instruction Listserv), and letting me know of your suggestions for the Section by contacting me at cfowler@mdanderson.org.
