AASL Seeks Proposals for preconferences to be presented at the AASL 14th National Conference - November 5-8, 2009

The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) is currently seeking half-day preconference proposals for the AASL 14th National Conference to be held in Charlotte, NC. The deadline for proposals is September 15, 2008.

AASL National Conference Overview

AASL Organization Overview

The American Association of School Librarians, a division of the American Library Association (ALA), promotes the improvement and extension of library media services in elementary and secondary schools as a means of strengthening the total education program. Its mission is to advocate excellence, facilitate change, and develop leaders in the school library media field.

AASL works to ensure that all members of the school library media field collaborate to:

  • provide leadership in the total education program;
  • participate as active partners in the teaching/learning process;
  • connect learners with ideas and information; and
  • prepare students for life-long learning, informed decision-making, a love of reading, and the use of information technologies.

Preconference Overview

AASL preconferences are full- or half-day workshops that cover key areas of special interest to school library media specialists.

AASL is searching for half-day workshops that will be presented to school library media specialists during the first two days of the AASL 14th National Conference.

Preconference topics are chosen by the AASL National Conference Committee to address critical topics for Pre-K-12 school library media specialists. Each proposal should address, at least, one of these topics as it pertains to the K-12 school library media specialist:

  • Technology
  • Collaboration 
  • Gaming
  • Reading

Through these preconferences, school library media specialists should be able to expand their knowledge, confidence, and understanding vital to their roles as instructional partners in student learning.

Rubric for the AASL 14th National Conference:

  1. The content of the proposed program is relevant to the conference theme: Rev Up Learning @ your library. Maximum score: 18 points
  2. The content of the proposed program connects to the vision of Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning; its themes of Collaboration, Leadership, and Technology, and school library media program responsibilities for Learning and Teaching, Information Access and Delivery, and Program Administrator. Proposals should specify and address at least one of the nine Standards for the 21st-Century Learner. Maximum score: 18 points
  3. The presentation meets adult learning needs, does not "lecture only" and includes elements of interaction with the audience. Maximum score: 18 points.
  4. Information presented will create learning extensions for the participants. What can the audience adapt or apply to his or her own situation? Maximum score: 18 points.
  5. The proposal is both creative and innovative. Maximum score: 18 points.
  6. Proposal includes all required elements; is well organized, clear, and concise. Maximum score: 10 points. 

Requirements for Program Presenters:

All presenters must register for the conference. Speakers who are not AASL members and who are not associated with the school library media profession may receive a one-day registration waiver.

  1. Preconference speakers will be paid an honorarium, travel expenses, and housing for one night.
  2. If the preconference has more than one presenter, then the honorarium will be divided between presenters. All presenters must consent to participate before the proposal is submitted.
  3. Presenters may be named and/or participate in NO MORE THAN TWO proposals.
  4. All information must be filled in to qualify for review. Please put "n/a" to indicate that the information required does not pertain to you.
  5. Vendor proposals will not be accepted or reviewed.

Honorium for a half-day preconference is $500.

All proposals received after September 15, 2008, 4:30 p.m. CDT will not be considered.
