Request for Exploratorium Proposals

November 5-8, 2009
Charlotte, North Carolina

The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) will hold its 14th National Conference and Exhibition November 5-8, 2009 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The National Conference Committee is pleased to announce the 2009 Request for Exploratorium Proposals.

The AASL 2009 National Conference theme is "Rev Up Learning @ your library." The committee encourages you to submit proposals to showcase your ideas, research, developments, and vision about the future of school libraries.

Exploratorium Presentations
Deadline:
March 30, 2009

The Exploratorium (Thursday, November 5, 2009) is a two-hour session consisting of learning stations where participants can browse at their own pace, spending as much or as little time at each station as they wish. All presenters will be supplied with a table, chair, display boards (upon request), and access to electricity (upon request). AV equipment such as projection screens, LCD projectors, etc., will not be furnished. Paper handouts are the responsibility of the presenter; however, we encourage presenters to make their handouts available on the AASL National Conference Web site.

The Exploratorium is the perfect venue to show off activities your school, district, or state has engaged in recently. We will accept proposals on the following topics:

bullet Action Research bullet Advocacy bullet Assessment
bullet Censorship bullet Collaboration bullet Collection Development
bullet Copyright bullet Funding bullet Leadership
bullet Learning Strategies bullet Literacy bullet Media Center Web sites
bullet Meeting Special Needs bullet Online Resources bullet Partnerships
bullet Program Evaluation bullet Reading Promotion bullet Scheduling Online
bullet Special Programs bullet Standards for the 21st-Century Learner

Exploratorium presentations will be chosen based on the following criteria:

  • Exemplify "best practices" in school librarianship
  • Highlight 21st-century learning standards
  • Showcase the excellence of school library media programs
  • Present a creative solution to a problem
  • Present a unique way of dealing with an issue.

All Exploratorium presentations should encourage participants to meet and interact with presenters. Vendor proposals will not be accepted.

Exploratorium presenters will be notified after May 25, 2009.

Submission Process

Once again, AASL is using an online submission process to receive proposals. The online submission process is comprised of three steps:

  • Enter your lead presenter information.
  • Enter your program details, including: title, program descriptions, and for concurrent sessions only: audience, grade levels, experience levels of audience, preferred room set, program outline, how the program will address Information Power and the Standards for the 21st-Century Learner, and primary topics addressed in the program.
  • Review your proposal summary and add additional presenters, if any.

After reviewing the summary of your program proposal, you will have the option of clicking either Save & Edit Later button, if you wish to add to or revise your proposal at any time prior to the March 30, 2009, deadline; or a Final Submit button, if you are completely satisfied with your proposal and do not need to add to or revise it further.

Your exploratorium proposal will be stored in a database, which will be used by the National Conference Program Review Subcommittee to select sessions for the 2009 conference in Charlotte, NC, and by the AASL staff to promote the conference.
