AASL 2009 Elections

Megan Esther Dolan

ISS Secretary

Degrees and Certifications

Catholic University of America, Masters in Library Science, 2007; Goshen College, BA in Spanish, 2002.

Current Position

Upper School Librarian, Sidwell Friends School, 2006-present.

Previous Positions

Middle School Spanish Teacher, Fairfax County Public Schools, 2003-06.

Accomplishments

During my time at Sidwell Friends I have participated in furthering the library program through enhancing research lessons and initiating book clubs. I also led the development of a bibliography grading program, which has dramatically increased the library's everyday activity in the classroom and has fostered an improved relationship with the faculty by providing them with a tangible benefit. This program has also increased the level of feedback that I am able to give to students and has improved my ability to evaluate the lessons I deliver. In addition, I have collaborated with the other librarians at my school to create and implement an eight step research process for all research lessons, which has streamlined and standardized the research experience for all students and teachers in the school. I have extended my level of service and community involvement beyond the library to serve on a variety of school committees both as an elected and as an ad hoc member. In a similar way, I hope to extend my service to the ISS community as Secretary.

Statement

Having previously been a middle school Spanish teacher, I graduated with an MLS from Catholic University and am in my third year as Upper School Librarian at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. At Sidwell Friends I have helped to further the library program through initiating book clubs and a bibliography grading program. Beyond the library, I have served on a variety of school committees dealing with academic, disciplinary, and community issues, among others. Similarly, I hope to extend my service to the ISS community as Secretary. Major factors prompting my decision to run for this position are the relationships that I have formed at conferences and online and the information exchange that these relationships foster. I would delight in the opportunity to serve ISS by furthering and increasing organization, communication, attention to detail, and follow-through to ensure that ISS is as valuable for members as possible.
