Statement
Now is a crucial time in education for school librarians across the United States. As a supervisor in a large Texas public school district, I lead by example as I work to improve school library programs in my district and state. As leaders in the national organization, we must work to find solutions to the problems such as budgets, staffing, space, and the recognition of school librarians’ contributions to the educational achievement of their students. In my fourth year as a district director, I have strengthened the district library program as I have overseen implementation of two different library automation systems and worked to improve the collaboration between librarians and the different curriculum departments. School library leaders at the national level need to reach out and work with the different national curriculum organizations (NCTELA, NCSS, NSTA, etc.) to educate their members on the services and assistance we can provide in all areas of education. We know we can make a difference, and I would like to work in AASL to make a difference for all of us.
