Purpose
The American Association of School Librarians (AASL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is seeking an Editor for its online journal, School Library Media Research.
Background
School Library Media Research (SLMR) is a highly respected, top-ranked research journal in the school library media field (Nisonger and Davis 2005). Its purpose is to promote and publish high-quality original research on the management, implementation, and evaluation of school library media programs. The journal emphasizes research on instructional theory, teaching methods, and critical issues relevant to school library media.
This official journal of AASL is online, freely available, and published annually.
Summary of Desired Service
The Editor position is a virtual appointment; all work can be handled remotely. Duties and responsibilities of the Editor include:
- Setting the scope and tone of the journal;
- Managing editorial activities;
- Coordinating the refereeing process;
- Soliciting high-quality articles and developing and maintaining positive relationships with authors and potential authors;
- Editing copy and related operations in consultation with ALA Production Services;
- Securing copyright as necessary for articles;
- Providing copy to ALA Production Services and maintaining the established style for content according to ALA publications;
- Answering questions and inquiries about SLMR;
- Serving as an ex-officio member of the AASL Publications Committees; and
- Performing other duties as needed.
General Qualifications
Responding individuals should demonstrate the ability to meet the following minimum requirements:
- Effective communication skills;

Technical capacity and ability to work in an electronic environment;

Experience in publishing and/or journalism sufficient to enable the individual to solicit and select refereed articles that will result in a high-quality publication;

Experience and expertise in research methods; and
-
Experience working in school library media;

Consideration will also be given to academic rank and tenure.
Compensation
The Editor will receive an annual stipend of $1000 to support attendance at the ALA Midwinter Meeting and Annual Conference.
Postage, phone charges, photocopying, and similar incidental expenses are reimbursed.
