Committee on Library Advocacy (COLA)

Charge

To support the efforts of advocates for all types of libraries; to develop resources, networks and training materials for advocates at the local, state and national levels with particular emphasis on the grassroots level; to work closely with the Office for Library Advocacy in collaboration with the Public Awareness Committee, the Chapter Relations Committee, the Committee on Legislation, and other ALA offices, divisions, and Round Tables as well as external groups to integrate advocacy efforts into the overall planning, priorities and policies of the association; and to cultivate future leadership in order to sustain and enhance the advocacy efforts of the association.

When you are logged in as an ALA member, the roster will display the committee members' contact information, in addition to their names, positions, and terms.

Composition

The Committee on Library Advocacy (COLA) consists of 13 members appointed from the membership at large, serving 2 year terms and led by a chair.

Origin

Established in [year] at the request of the [organizing body]. The Committee on Library Advocacy (COLA) was originally charged with [whatever], but in [year] its scope changed to include [this addition].

Get Involved

ALA values committed and active committee members. Qualified members are welcome to volunteer to serve on Committee on Library Advocacy (COLA). Committee members must have an interest in the work of the committee; be able to attend Annual Conferences and Midwinter Meetings to participate in the meetings and activities of the committee; and be able to work between conferences via e-mail and ALA Connect. Express your interest in serving on this or other committees by filling out an application form. Appointments take place once a year, during the spring. Committee service usually begins following Annual Conference, about July 1.
