Authority Control in the Online Environment Interest Group
Celebrates 20-Year Anniversary at American Library Association Annual Meeting

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Authority Control in the Online Environment Interest Group (ACIG) begins the celebration of its 20 th anniversary on Sunday, June 27, 2004 in room 311 A/C of the Orange County Convention Center. This year’s meeting program entitled, “FAST, Slow and Z39.19: Emerging Trends in Subject Authority Control” will be held from 1:30-4:00 with the anniversary reception immediately following. Tea and cake will be served, provided by MARCIVE, Inc.

This popular LITA/ALCTS CCS interest group was initially proposed in 1984 by Barbara Tillett and established in 1985 with Ms. Tillett as the founding chair. Its mission is to provide a forum for discussion of a variety of issues related to authority control for online catalogs and for international sharing of authority of data. The goals of this group are to raise the level of awareness on authority control issues, to encourage ideas for new approaches to authority control, and to promote significant research on authority control. To this end, ACIG has been organizing programs and discussions at ALA Midwinter and ALA Annual Conferences for two decades.

This year the program will be moderated by the current interest group chair, Qiang Jin, Original Cataloging Librarian and NACO coordinator at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The program speakers and their topics include:

Barbara Tillett, Chief, Cataloging Policy and Support Office (CPSO), Library of Congress: ACIG Past and Future

Stephen Hearn, Authority Control Coordinator, University of Minnesota: Z39.19 revised: new models for controlled vocabulary

Arlene Taylor, Professor Emerita, Department of Library and Information Science, School of Information Sciences, Univ. of Pittsburgh: What Have We Got to Lose? The Effect of Controlled Vocabulary on Keyword Searching Results
