Open Source Systems Interest Group
Meeting Minutes Annual 2005
Outgoing Chair: Kyle Fenton
Incoming Chair: Gwendolyn Reece
Update:
- There were three programs at Annual 2005: A
preconference on Shibboleth, an informational session on Shibboleth, and a
lecture on Greenstone. All three went well and were well attended.
- There is a new system for time slots. Our traditional meeting time will have to change. We will try to make sure it does not end up opposite of top tech trends.
Program Planning:
At the time of the group meeting, we had not yet met with the Program Planning Board. Some of our goals in creating programs have been to reach out to people other than just systems librarians in order to get them involved. A couple of the programs are designed to fulfill that function. We were planning on offering three programs.
- Preconference on Project Management and DotProject.
The goal is to get a trainer in project management and then also get somebody
to talk about the particular product. Maybe appeal to “LAMA types” as well.
- Lecture Program on “Why should Reference Librarians
care about Open Source?” For this, we will need to get volunteers to cover a
number of different types of products – including reviews. George Harmon
volunteered to do a comparison of Endnote and Open Source equivalents. There
will be an introductory piece and then a series of product reviews of things
that would be useful for reference librarians.
- Lecture Program on Reserves Direct, a new product from Emory. Probably involving Kyle and Maurice. The draw here will be both Systems and Access Services types.
At the Program Planning committee…the PPC asked us to do another half day preconference on Greenstone. They are going to co-sponsor it, since Gwendolyn indicated that she already had her hands really full with three programs. Kyle also volunteered to help.
Chair Elections:
John Ruthorford from Wayne State is the incoming Vice Chair. It will be his responsibility to have a preliminary discussion about programs for annual 2007 at Midwinter in San Antonio and to propose the programs at annual 2006 for the following year.
Many, many thanks to Kyle for his leadership!!!
