2005 Annual Conference Program Report

GROUP = JPEG 2000 in Archives and Libraries Interest Group

CHAIR = Peter Murray

REPORTER = Peter Murray

EMAIL = peter@OhioLINK.edu

MEETING = Program

PROGRAM TITLE = Access, Preservation, and Interchange: Digital Imaging with JPEG 2000

ATTENDEES = 150

CURRENT ACTIVITIES = The j2kIG successfully concluded its first-ever program at ALA. There were about 150 attending the presentation with a wide variety of perspectives. About 1/2 of the attendees were from academic libraries with a roughly equal proportion of public, special, and vendor representation among the remainder. Several attendees are using JPEG 2000 in production now, several are bringing up production environments or actively evaluating software using the standard, and most attendees identified themselves as in the "curious" or "learning" categories.

Rob Buckley started with an overview of JPEG 2000, how it is different than what came before in imaging standards, and why those differences are important to the needs, desires and practices of libraries. The subsequent speakers presented a wide array of products and projects that caused jaws to drop and imaginations to become engaged. At the conclusion, one respondent told me that prior to the meeting she had been satisfied with the "we support JPEG 2000" response from a vendor; now she wanted have a conversation with the vendor about what parts and profiles of the flexible JPEG 2000 standard are included in the product.

A LITA Blog summary of the presentation is available at http://litablog.org/?p=68 (thank you, Kevin Clarke!). PDF copies of the presentation slides are being posted to http://j2karclib.info/node/65 as they are available.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS = It didn't occur to me until I got onsite that I didn't have the LITA attendance sheets. Given the proximity of the hotel to the convention center, I wasn't able to get to the LITA Office to pick one up. If I'd remembered beforehand, I could have printed them off the LITA website; I'd suggest sending a message to Committee and IG chairs mailing list the week before the meeting encouraging chairs to make copies in advance before coming to the meeting.
