GROUP: Heads of Library Technology Interest Group
CHAIR: Sue Thompson
REPORTER: Sue Thompson
EMAIL: sthompsn@csusm.edu
CONFERENCE: midwinter
MEETING: Interest Group business meeting
ATTENDEES: 22
CURRENT ACTIVITIES: 22 people attended HoLT at MidWinter in San Antonio.
Most of the meeting was devoted to the HoLTalk open discussion. HoLTalk looked at what technologies library system departments typically support and how we manage them. Several topics focused on desktop support including securing desktop computers in general and controlling installation of software (especially on staff computers) in particular. Other issues talked about included whether or not to use library print management systems, how to deal with user expectations of systems projects, and software for tracking systems work.
FUTURE ACTIVITIES: We finalized plans for our ALA 2006 summer program, Core Competencies in Library Technologies. In this two hour program a panel of speakers representing both public and academic libraries will identify trends in technology skills needed by today's library staff and share some of the approaches their libraries have taken to identify and develop core competencies. LAMA-SASS is co-sponsoring the program.
