CONFERENCE: Midwinter
MEETING: Interest Group business meeting
ATTENDEES: 19
CURRENT ACTIVITIES: The first meeting of Bigwigs IG was quite a success! We had 19 attendees and had a nice mix of those who are new to blogging and those with blog experience. Attendees included many LITA bloggers, including LITA Past President Pat Ensor. Two of these attendees were library school students.
The focus on this first meeting was the LITA Blog. The group discussed the following policies. Posting is limited to current LITA members. Posting to the LITA Blog is one of the privileges of being a member. The group agreed that once a member requests account it will stay active for six months and if in that time, the user does not post. The account will be closed. This will be added to directions for LITA Bloggers.
The next topic of discussion was content on the Lita Blog. Currently, most of the posting has been around the LITA Forum and ALA conferences. IG members agreed that posting to the LITA Blog is not limited to those time frames, but that we were also not going to commit to posting year-round. The emphasis will continue to be conference blogging (though postings are encouraged at any time!). Also, posts to the LITA Blog should either be about LITA members or items that pertain to LITA members. (This has not been a problem area, but it was worth clarifying.) There was also agreement that items could be posted to multiple places, i.e the LITA website, LITA Blog, LITA-L, in order to ensure wider dissemination and communication with LITA members. To that end, Clara Ruttenberg will be monitoring LITA-L and posting appropriate items to the LITA Blog. Clara Ruttenberg also made an announcement at the IG Chair Meetings to remind Chairs to post their meeting minutes to the LITA Blog and Karen Schneider made a similar reminder to Committee Chairs at their meeting.

The Group will be facilitating a presentation at ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans 2006 on Next Stop Blogging: Building A Professional Blog for your Library. The tentative program description is How to start and maintain a professional library Blog. Topics include selecting and installing bogging software, tips for successful publishing and marketing, writing style tips and featured plugins (software widgets) that can extend the functionality and usefulness of your library blog. The target audience for this program is anyone responsible for installing a maintaining a professional library Blog.
Karen Coombs from the University of Houston will be working on a WAP style sheet for the Library Blog and form to be used by new bloggers to request an account for the LITA Blog. Clara Ruttenberg will be monitoring LITA-L for appropriate items that should be posted to the blog, create categories and then ask for volunteers. Pat Ensor will be working to ensure that there will be place to blog at future conferences.
