PROGRAM: Authority Control Meets Faceted Browse
This program will introduce the audience to facet theory, showcase implementations that use faceted approaches to information retrieval from online catalogs, and facilitate discussion on the relationship between structured authority data and this type of navigation.
Kathyrn La Barre, Assistant Professor, Graduate School of Library & Information Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Authority Control Meets Faceted Browse: Theory (PowerPoint).
One of the most prevalent approaches being utilized by those who seek to provide updated OPAC search, browse, and display interfaces is being called faceted classification (FC) or guided navigation. This presentation will provide an overview of OPAC products using FC/guided navigation. Vendor approaches to authority data will be presented in the context of basic instruction in the nuts and bolts of facets and facet analysis (the theoretical elements that underpin some of the most popular OPAC interfaces being marketed today).
Charley Pennell, Principal Cataloger for Metadata, North Carolina State University Libraries. Forward to the past: Resurrecting faceted search @ NCSU Libraries (Powerpoint).
Following on the lead of e-commerce sites like Amazon and Home Depot, the NCSU Libraries took the leap to faceted catalog searching in January 2006 with the first library implementation of Endeca's Guided Navigation system. We will look at the pre- and post-coordinate facets made available through this interface, with particular attention to the subject, author, and classification facets. Some problems and potential solutions through use of hierarchical tables, FAST, and links to authority browse will be discussed.
Mary Charles Lasater, Authorities Coordinator, Vanderbilt University Libraries: Authority Control Meets Faceted Browse: Vanderbilt and Primo (Powerpoint).
Vanderbilt is working with Ex Libris to use PRIMO to search two library resources, the library catalog and a large database--The TVNEWS Archive. Facets from the MARC and non-MARC environment will be shown. Authority control issues will be discussed.
Casey Bisson, Information Architect, Plymouth State University. Faceting and Clustering - An Implementation Report Based on Scriblio (PDF). This presentation is also available, along with supporting text, at maisonbisson.
