The Public Relations and Marketing Section provides a framework and impetus for the study of public relations theory and policies; for improving the practice of public relations in public, school, college and university, and special libraries; for serving as public relations liaison between the division and other ALA units; and for identifying those aspects of public relations about which the profession needs to be informed and educated so as to conduct appropriate programs and institutes.

Events at 2008 ALA Annual in Anaheim:

  • Hot Topics: Are You in the Game?  Harnessing Millennial Learning Strategies to Market Your Library
    • Don’t miss this “Hot Topic” presented by the Education and Training Committee.  Millennial learning strategies in terms of gaming and Second Life will be discussed by Tammy Allgood and Marisa Duarte who have worked with these technologies at Arizona State University and Fresno County Public Library. After the speakers have shared their experience and expertise, participants will break out into groups for discussions lead by the speakers. Each group will be given a sample idea to discuss and work on with their group. Saturday, June 28 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
  • PR Makeovers and Best of Show to Highlight Swap and Shop 2008
    • Swap and Shop, held at the Annual Conference since 1974, features promotional materials from libraries across North America, available for all attendees to peruse and take home as they seek ideas for their own public relations efforts.
    • The popular "PR Doctors," Peggy Barber of Library Communications Strategies and graphic designer Sam Silvio, will select two lucky entries submitted from libraries for makeovers. The makeovers will be unveiled during the Swap and Shop event on Sunday, June 29 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. See the "before" and "after"materials, and get personalized advice from a PR Doctor. The Best of Show award-winning materials, selected from hundreds of entries in the national competition, will also be on display. • Plus, you can have your own library's PR materials on display! Check back here in May for details about shipping Swap & Shop submissions to Anaheim. We'll proudly display your materials and make them available for attendees to take home with them. There's no Swap and Shop without you!
