IRRT Project for the 2008 Emerging Leaders Institute
IRRT Free Links: An Emerging Leaders Project Providing Access to Free Professional Development Opportunities for
Our project was to identify and select free web-based tutorials & professional development information for librarians in other countries to access via the Internet. The project is meant to help international librarians stay current with library information and trends in the United States and elsewhere. The intended audience is librarians or library staff members who do not have the funds to travel to conferences or regular access to professional development resources in their own countries and want to advance their skills in emerging areas. The identified areas of professional development the project focuses on are grant opportunities, collection development, digital collections, information literacy, leadership and management, and technology training and issues. The resources will be pulled together into an online format linked from the IRRT wiki. These links will be evaluated to determine relevance, accessibility/format, language choices, organization, and currency. The progress will be reviewed by outside international librarians periodically.
In the first half of 2008, our group gathered information and presented, in an online format, one of these large areas of professional development: technology training and issues. We presented the results of our project at an Emerging Leaders poster session on Friday June 27, 2008 and at the ALA-wide international poster session on Sunday June 29, 2008 at the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim.
