Background information
Charge from ALA President Ann K. Symons
The Congress on Professional Education, planned for April 30–May 1, 1999, is the first step in what may be a longer series of discussions and events—focusing on increasingly broader issues to the field. The focus of this year’s activities and the May meeting will be on the initial preparation of librarians, i.e., ALA accredited programs, NCATE programs, and some of the issues that have surfaced over the last year on the various Discussion lists and at Council. These issues include the “L” word, perceived omission of core competencies in the field of librarianship, perceived lack of preparation to serve particular groups, etc.
There are many other issues surrounding education for librarians and Other library workers such as continuing education, certification, recruitment, etc. It will be the intent of the Steering Committee to identify these issues for further exploration and study in the future.
It is important that we within the short time frame we have this year, we address the immediate issues raised by many ALA members.
Charge from the ALA Executive Board
During its Spring 1998 meeting, the ALA Executive Board:
“Voted, To ask staff to present a funding/program plan by the fall 1998 Board meeting for the creation of a summit on library education to be conducted no later than the year 2000 Annual Conference; and that representatives from appropriate constituencies be included in the planning process.”
