INTRODUCTION
 

This year's Guide updates the listing in the 2003 Bowker Annual with information on new services and changes in contacts and groups listed previously. The sources listed primarily give assistance in obtaining professional positions, although a few indicate assistance with paraprofessionals.  A few to begin with are: Council on Library/Media Technicians, Inc., resources for on the job in libraries at LibrarySupportStaff.com, and Library Support Staff Resource Center's Employment Resources http://flightline.highline.ctc.edu/lssrc/.

GENERAL SOURCES OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION JOBS

Library Literature: Classified ads of library vacancies and positions wanted are carried in many of the national, regional, state and organizational library journals, newsletters and periodicals. Members of associations can sometimes list "position wanted" ads free of charge in their membership publications. Listings of positions available are regularly found in American Libraries, Chronicle of Higher Education, College & Research Libraries News, Library Journal, and Library Hotline. State and regional library association newsletters, state library journals, foreign library periodicals, and other types of periodicals carrying such ads are listed in later sections.

Newspapers: Local newspapers, particularly the larger city Sunday editions, such as the Washington Post, the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Chicago Tribune often carry job vacancy listings in libraries, both professional and paraprofessional. There are also online versions of the newspapers and journals.

Internet: Many library-related electronic listservs on the Internet often post library job vacancies interspersed with other news and discussion items. A number of general online job search bulletin boards exists.  By surfing the internet, these may include information-related job notices along with other types of jobs. This Guide includes information on electronic access where available through the individual organizations listed below.

LIBRARY JOBLINES
 

Library joblines or job "hotlines" give recorded telephone messages of job openings in a specific geographical area. Most tapes are changed once a week, although individual listings may sometimes be carried for several weeks. Although the information is fairly brief and the cost of calling is borne by the individual job seeker, a jobline provides a quick and up-to-date listing of vacancies that is not usually possible with printed listings or journal ads.
 

Most joblines carry listings for their state or region only although some will occasionally accept out-of-state positions if there is room on the tape. While a few will list technician and other paraprofessional positions, the majority are for professional jobs only. When calling the joblines, one might occasionally find a time when the telephone keeps ringing without any answer. This will usually mean that the tape is being changed or there are no new jobs for that period. The classified section of American Libraries carries jobline numbers periodically in issues as space permits.

LIBRARY AND INFORMATION STUDIES PROGRAMS

Library and information studies programs offer some type of service for their current students as well as alumni. Most schools provide job hunting and resume writing seminars. Many have outside speakers representing different types of libraries or recent graduates relating career experiences. Faculty or designated placement officers provide individual advising services or critiquing of resumes.

The central university placement center handles activities for the following schools: California-Berkeley (alumni) and Emporia. However, in most cases, faculty in the library school will still do informal counseling regarding job seeking.

In some schools, the placement services are handled in a cooperative manner. In most cases the university placement center sends out credentials while the library school posts or compiles the job listings. Schools utilizing one or both sources include:
