RESOLUTION ON DEPOSITORY LIBRARIES

WHEREAS, The Depository Library Program (Title 44, Chapter 19, United States Code) is designed to make United States government publications available for use by the general public and to insure their continued availability in the future, and (77.06.20 W1)
WHEREAS, The Congress is now considering revisions to the Depository Library Program to provide depository designation of accredited law schools, and (77.06.20 W2)
WHEREAS, The extension of the Depository Library Program to libraries of accredited law schools would provide increased access to a broad spectrum of government publications to the general public, and (77.06.20 W3)
WHEREAS, The users of law school libraries have a need for access to government publications for reference and study, and (77.06.20 W4)
WHEREAS, Service to the general public could be increased by the creation of congressional depository vacancies (available for redesignation) when a law school library now operating as a depository library is designated a depository under the proposed legislation, therefore be it (77.06.20 W5)
RESOLVED, That the American Library Association endorse legislation which extends congressional designation of depository status to libraries of accredited law schools which accept the responsibilities (especially those provided in 44 U.S.C. 1911, including the free use of government publications in depositories) and the privileges of regular congressional designated depository libraries.
