Introduction

In 1988 at the American Library Association Annual Conference the Government Documents Roundtable, Maps and Geography Roundtable and the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section organized one of the first programs to focus solely on government documents as rare books. These essays represent some of the first published discussions of an issue that has steadily gained in importance. The articles have been reprinted here through the courtesy of the authors and the help and support of GODORT.
