During this full day session presenters will review current research on reading instruction; discuss how it informs classroom practice, explore reading strategies and explain what the library media specialist can do to enhance them. Managing the Changing Research Models in the Humanities

In an academic setting where many undergraduates never learned the models for conducting research with print materials, and many graduate students and faculty struggle with evolving electronic interfaces, those transmitting research skills need new metaphors, communication techniques and, perhaps, objectives. This workshop will provide an overview of the current environment in humanities research, focusing on library services and communication initiatives. Gain an understanding of changing research environments within the humanities and design an information-literacy lesson plan.

The Complex Edifice: Analyzing Your Dream Library

This two-day course, which fulfills a core requirement for the Certified Public Library Administrator Program (www.ala-apa.org/certification/cpla.html), is open to all interested librarians and facilities planners. Participants will learn to determine the functionality of a library facility, establish the capital investment needs, and develop operating and capital budgets. CPLA candidates who participate will receive resources for preparation for the onsite session, and are expected to complete assignments including a final project for evaluation. William Sannwald, retired city librarian of the San Diego Public Library, is the course instructor. He is currently a full-time management and marketing professor in the business school at San Diego State University.
