AASL
Independent School Section (ISS) School Tour
Friday, June 24, 2005, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm
Enjoy a day with your colleagues as we visit four distinctive libraries in Chicago! The University of Chicago Laboratory School was founded by philosopher and educator John Dewey in 1896. Today, lower, middle and high schools have their own libraries, with 77,000 books, 160 periodicals, a unique storytelling program and children's literature award. The Cristo Rey Jesuit (Catholic) High School is a new school with a library under construction. At this bilingual school students work in Chicago businesses to earn their tuition. Learn about building a library from the ground up, as well as Spanish language collection development. Roundtrip transportation is included.

Milwaukee Art Museum Tour

Join us on a tour of the Milwaukee Art Museum. The first Santiago Calatrava-designed building in the United States, features a 90-foot high glass-walled reception hall enclosed by the Burke Brise Soleil. Featured in the museum is the exhibit of Ashley Bryan, Coretta Scott King winning illustrator, puppet maker and scholar of African and African-American folklore. The exhibit includes approximately 25 puppets as well as a puppet theater.

Reza's is a Middle Eastern restaurant, in a spacious setting with high ceilings and French doors that open on to Ontario Street in the summer. The dinner includes appetizers, entrees (at least one vegetarian option), beverages, and dessert. The ticket price is $35.00 per person. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible. Part of the proceeds of the dinner is donated to benefit the Century Scholarship.

Literary Tastes: A Notable Books Breakfast

Come and celebrate the most notable writing of our time with a panel of authors from the 2005 Notable Book Council's "List for America's Readers." Scheduled to appear thus far are the acclaimed investigative journalist and Pulitzer Prize-winning Seymour M. Hersh, author of Chain of Command: The Road from 9/11 to Abu Ghraib; Nathaniel Philbrick, the acclaimed author of Sea of Glory: America's Voyage of Discovery: The U.S. Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842 and the Director of the Egan Institute of Maritime Studies on Nantucket Island; noted poet and Langston Hughes Medal-winning Nikki Giovanni, The Collected Poetry of Nikki Giovanni, 1968-1998; Mark Kurlansky, foreign correspondent, recipient of numerous books awards, author of 1968: The Year that Rocked the World; and the new Poet Laureate of the United States, Ted Kooser, author of Delights and Shadows .
After breakfast, the authors will be available for book signings and conversations. Come join this not to be missed annual celebration of the best writing of our time. The last thirty minutes of the program are devoted to author signings.

National Dialogue on the Curriculum of Readiness for the 21st Century Librarian
Tuesday, June 28, 2005, 8:30 am - 5:30 pm
This invitational summit, co-sponsored by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, will bring together leaders in LIS education with practitioners from varied library types and settings. Program participants will discuss needed reform in and enhancements to current LIS education and pedagogy with special attention to the recruitment and education of students from under represented backgrounds. Summit participants will participate in active dialogue, and generate a set of formal recommendations that shall be incorporated in a published report to be disseminated to the profession. Facilitated by ALA Office for Diversity staff, the Spectrum Advisory Committee, and program consultants Jose’ Aponte and Dr. Ethelene Whitmire. Invitations to representatives of relevant institutions have been disseminated.
