ASCLA currently has four sections: Independent Librarian's Exchange (ILEX), Interlibrary Cooperation and Networking (ICAN), Libraries Serving Special Populations, (LSSPS), and State Library Agencies (SLAS).
ASCLA Sections
A section is a formal membership unit within a division that focuses on areas of specific concern. Sections may provide education,advise the parent body regarding service guidelines and enhancements, promote awareness, and prepare publications.
To study, improve, promote, and represent the interests and activities of libraries involved in statewide, multistate, and national coordination of cooperative and multitype library systems and information networks designed to provide a nationwide information delivery system that equalizes access to information resources.
To expand the definition of librarianship by supporting ALA members who work outside of traditional library settings and by providing programs, information exchange, and networking opportunities.
To improve the quality of library service for people with special needs, including people who have vision, mobility, hearing, and developmental differences, people who are elderly, people in prisons, health care facilities, and other types of institutions; to improve library service for families and professionals working with these people; to foster awareness of these populations and their needs in the library community and among the general public.
To develop and strengthen the unique role and functions of state library agencies in providing leadership and services that foster and improve the delivery of library services. To stimulate the continued professional development of state library agency personnel in discharging their unique functions in such areas as statewide planning and evaluation, services to state governments and legislatures, services to local libraries, services to users with special needs, etc.
